My Daughter’s Prayer
By Larry Chadwick

Every night she knelt beside her bed,
My daughter would say her prayer.
She prayed for mommy and daddy,
And for her brother to learn to share.

Then she’d hop under the covers,
And daddy would kiss her cheek.
“Don’t let the bed bugs bite.”
Lights out, I’d take another peek.

But after daddy was for sure gone,
She would climb back out of bed.
Slip to her knees and pray once more,
Talking to Jesus this is what she said:

“Jesus, my daddy is still in school,
The car we drive isn’t very good.
So tomorrow when I get out of bed,
I want a Firebird with the eagle on the hood.”

Now she was only five years old,
She knew Jesus answered prayers.
It was the same routine every night,
And a dash to the door to see if it was there.

I know because she confessed to me,
The truth of these events this year.
So twenty-two years have gone by,
And Christmas is drawing near.

I’ve already done my holiday shopping,
And it has really been so much fun.
So it’s wrapped and finally in the box,
Off to Fed Ex and my work is done.

The past is history and the future is a mystery, but today is a gift and that is why it is the present!

Well, a real Firebird wouldn't fit in a box, so did you get her a model?  Sweet poem, Larry.  Sounds like you have a wonderful family.

RosePetal,
Thanks! And from what I hear you're a pretty special girl too.

Kacy,

You are more than welcome. But please don't melt in my cup! How will I find you the next day? I want one of those perpetual sugar cubes...I'm sure they must exist somewhere.

Kacy,
I'm forever sweet! Does that count?
Did you hear about Marge's contest being fixed?

Yes. Rattle and Hum. One of U2's best albums. And what about Keith Jarrett? Concert at Koln?  Jarrett is a classical and jazz piano virtuoso.
Yep, anewanythingaboutnow.

A very special story, Larry...and very beautifully written.
It sounds like your daughter is a very lucky girl...even if the car does fit into a box.

What a sweet daughter you have there. You'll have to let us know what she says when she opens it. I bet it brings a tear to someone, and probably both of you.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

Larry, I loved this!  I have heard some GOOD prayers as the 5 kids were growing up.  Sometimes I really wanted to "help" God and answer faster, but He seemed to know what He was doing.  I know she will love the gift no matter what it is.  What memories you have brought back.  Hugs,  ME
