Perfect day --
bright, warm sunshine toasting shoulders,
hair billowing in the laughter of breeze,
toes and heels coolly damp in the drying morning dew.
Tiny fringes tease bare skin where cut-off frays dance
below the hem of a threadbare red shirt,
old ghost of an image fading away on the front;
Strawberry Shortcake's smile half-peeled from her face.
Feet pick up speed, throwing up delicate purple petals,
sweetly filling the air with a subtle perfume.
Small, clumsy hands touch old, cracked rubber
as the faint scent of dirt and petroleum
causes even the fairest, freckled nose to wrinkle.
My younger self climbs on top of the circular swing,
brown legs tanned from months of play
dangling in the open hole below.
Fingers grope for rough rope,
heedless of the harsh, wiry fiber
awakening burning sensation
as movement begins, a simple spinning,
head tossed back in pure joy.
Blue and white whirls above,
immense open sky-ocean,
faster,
faster,
until the color joins into a cotton candy mixture,
punctuated by the vibration of motion.

~What is cherished most is what must be the hardest fought for.~

This is wonderful! I had fun swinging on that old tire, and could almost smell the years of road dust and feel that scratchy rope. But the swirling cotton candy sky was the best!
