Eight Candles

Eight single candles to be burned
Eight sacred lessons to be learned
Of holding on to tenants taught
Of strength to win the battle fought

Of will to salvage what was there
A temple left in ill repair
Of gathering in warm embrace
To dedicate a holy place

Eight days for courier’s return
Eight days menorah brightly burned
Illuminating face and walls
And faith within the temple halls

Of strength, of faith, of toil, of love
Of miracle from God above
Of celebration, thankfulness
Remembrance of all we’re blessed

These are eight lessons to be learned
Each time a candle wick is burned
When dusk is dimming sunset skies
And all look on with loving eyes

May Hanukkah bring joy and peace
To all those gathered at your feast
There are eight nights, eight wicks to burn
A driedel spun when it’s your turn

Happy Hanukkah
Liz

Noah,
Just your exuberance was worth writing the poem. I am so glad you liked it. (I had to do a little reading first. Don't tell anyone)
But you truly warm my heart, you really do.

You are always there to read and that alone is an inspiration to me

Elizabeth this was such a beautiful poem in celebration of Chaunaka for our Jewish members, and I know they will love reading it as much as I did. Shalom, Happy Chaunaka, and Happy Ramadan too!

I share your feelings on Hannukah..and wish any and all who celebrate it, eight days of  peace, and family contentment in all it's traditions. You do touch the soul with your words.

I had to reply to this, considering it's the first day of Hanukkah!
Thank you for writing this - there aren't enough Hanukkah poems around.

HAPPY HANUKKAH EVERYONE!

Lady Liz, had to bring this up as there are not enough wonderful poems for our Jewish friends this time of year.  Beautiful poetry and I will call, sorry got sidetracked.
