Haystacks

Haystacks, hardly stately
Stand like statues
None-the-less
And though they’re slightly slumped
They’re pardoned
For the mess
Grain grown with dreams of bread
The Staff assigned to motherhood
Now known it seems instead
The chaff consigned
To fodderhood

This poem was in response to a friend who indicated that she likeked "a play on words".
I sat down at my desk and The word Haystacks popped into my mind.  My Muse dictated this and I swear that I didn't know what play on words was coming until the last word.  To my disappointment my friend didn't get it since she never heard of chaff, nor fodder, nor the saying "bread is the Staff of life" so I had to explain it all.  Fodderhood is a made up word of course.  I grew up in a rural area and took it for granted that everyone knew what fodder was but I realized then that some words have a regional recognition.

Thanks for the responses
Joe
