This poem was inspired by Robert Burns' Ode to a Mouse, and should be read with a Scottish brogue.

ODE TO A SQUIRREL

THAT BUSHY-TAILED GRAY-BODY
JUST SEE HOW HE'S SPRINGING
FROM FENCE POST TO TREE TRUNK
WITH TWITTER-SQUAWK SINGING.

ALL NERVOUS AND TWITCHERY
HIS BODY SPASMODIC
TURNS THIS WAY AND THAT WAY
IN ANTICS NEUROTIC.

A QUICK CHECK FOR ENEMIES
CAT, DOG, AND MAN
AND FINDING THERE NONE
IN ATTENTION'S SHORT SPAN
HE SPIRALS UP TREE TRUNK
IT'S OFF TO THE RACES
A'CHASING HIS LOVERS
AT DIZZYING PACES.

O'ER DRY BARK OF OAK TREE
HIS TOENAILS A'CLATTER
THEN BOUGH BOUND HE FLIES OFF
TO LEAFY SPLASH SPLATTER
WITH DESPERATE CLUTCHING
AS BOUGH'S BOUND TO FAIL HIM
HE'S HAND-OVER-HANDING
LEST FENCE POST IMPALE HIM.

NOW FROLIC AND FRETWORN
ON ACORN HE'S CHEWING
CONTENTED AND MINDLESS
OF MESS THERE HE'S STREWING.

A SQUIRREL, A SQUIRREL
AS PROUD AS CAN BE
AND DARWIN GOD DAMN HIM
NO RODENT IS HE!

My Scotish brogue sounds a little squirrely, but the poem is a fun read even in AmerEng modern.

Ahhh, they are so cute - I feed them all the time!  However, now that you reminded me and used the word "rodent" well they just seem somehow less appealing to me!
Very cute first post and by the way Joe,

Hi Joe - Welcome aboard - I love your poem - It's my kind of fun for sure - I have a couple of 'odes' myself... This one is delightful - and it's nice to be able to welcome a neighbor to our wonderful site - We seem to have very few folks from Massachusetts among us... Settle in and enjoy some good reads... and check your mailbox for a special greeting as well...

Hello Joe!  Welcome to Passions.  Seeing as how two of our Moderators swamped your e-mail with Special Greetings, I'll just pull up a chair and welcome you to the table.

As a side note, writing your poetry in all caps is akin to YELLING at someone...

I can hear you just fine if you don't yell.

Now, I'll go look for some more of your poetry!

Karilea
If I whisper, will you listen?...
I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound.
