Once an egg is broken, it can never be replaced.
Once a word is written, it can never be erased.
Once a shoe has worn out, its usefulness has, too
And one of the things of knowing love
Is knowing when it's through.

Once a flower has wilted, its fragrance disappears.
Once a word is spoken, it will echo through the years.
Once a match has burned out, it will never flame anew
And one of the things of knowing love
Is knowing when it's through.

Funny all the time spent on half-forgotten dreams.
Funny all the energy we waste on foolish schemes.
We wouldn't strike that matchstick to watch it flame anew,
Why, then, can't we know enough
To know when love is through?

So, on we go, relentlessly, in spite of tears and pain
Trying to stop the leaves from falling
Trying to stop the rain,
But, once a heart is broken, it will always be in two,
And one of the things of knowing love
Is knowing when it's through.

How very, very true are the words here. One of the hardest parts of love, is knowing when it is through. Love the way you wrote this, with gentle words of truth. Much wisdom written here.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

Be careful, I love horses ya know. But now, I am really curious. And my name isn't George.

Sometimes it takes a while to know when love is through, since it may only be ending for one and not the other...but love takes on many forms, and may become less intimate and yet eventually ever-lasting, as it turns into friendship. I enjoyed this one, and as always your flow and rhyme and repetitious style shines.

Oh my, this hits me like a brick..hey maybe a brick in the head is what I need, to stop looking for love in all the old places.
I did notice within the poem, the only thing that held onto its value throughout, were the words. Twice, they made note of lasting forever.
Great write.

'Deer dear heart, yes a flying visit, did you miss me? (you should aim better then   ) Did I or did I not leave a note asking to be told when you were going to post some of my favourites? I don't know, a girl takes a little break for a short while, and look what happens! I know out of sight out of mind. Oh well, c'est la vie!

I really do love this one, I think I told you so before, but in case I didn't, this is one of my favourites, thanks for posting it again.

(nb: Please dear 'Deer the next time you post one of my favourites send me a note hmmm) Yes you do know which are my favourites, All of them

As for this particular poem it is as always quite outstandingly written, it's flow is perfect it's form is divine. I should have known in an instant that this was thine. Truly excellent

Didn't you know my sweet, sweet Deer

It shuts the eyes, it shuts the ears
The only thing left is shedding tears

With only about 5 minutes to spare online, where else would I turn but to a sure thing... a Balladeer poem? *S* Now if Toe was around, the sure thing would be a smiling suthern turning towards her sunshine... but I digress. *G*

I love this poem, Deer One... for both the content and the perfect way it was written.

But once you know love is through... over, kaput, dead, buried, destroyed and decaying... when oh when does the hurting pack its bags and leave? *S*

Truth -- from a certain point of view...  Love is never truly "through" until the memories somehow "disappear."  But you have words and thoughts definitely worth pondering here, in a style that is always appreciated.

Wow Balladeer. Often there is a time when the sun wanes and its light fades into oblivion. Too often I find myself in the shade, searching for the light I knew once shined, seeking the twin suns in my mate's eyes. My sight is blurred by my own imaginative mind...seeing things that aren't there. How do we know? Taking a step back and looking from outside the circle often reveals when the time is through. I forget that fact alot. Thanks for your timeless words, they are an inspiration.

'Deer - great poem, and let us not forget...
Once a poet has lost it, he'll write like Balladeer.
Once a word is found misused, you can bet Bal' did it here.
Once a pirate comes around, he'll show old 'Deer he's through
And one of the things about old Long John:
He loves ya, 'Deer, in spite of you.

Hi ya, scalawag - how have you been keeping yourself?  Come on up this week - Lorelei is going to Arkansas and I need an excuse to be just like you - lol.
