America, My Home

I’ve felt the hand of censorship
Touch upon my back
I’ve tread upon the streets of fear
And never wandered back

I’ve known the power of tyranny
And separation's pain
I had a friend who walked away
And never came again

I’ve had my children taken
With machine gun to my face
I know the laws injustice breeds
And degradation’s place

Now I hear the chimes of freedom
and I write the poems I choose
With not a hand upon my back
To smother or abuse

I’ve found a haven of contentment
and a justice that protects
A flag that waves in dignity
Of every soul’s respect

I came back to America
New visions in my eye
Of how I want to live my life
And how I want to die

I reside where I have chosen
and I’ve chosen what I do
It is a privilege and a right somewhere
That’s known to only few

There’s a flag that waves before me
Underneath a cloudy dome
It’s the symbol of America
My country and my home

And aren't we the fortunate ones...
to have our own come home...

Very well expressed, Elizabeth. We've more to be grateful for than we realize. God bless our home sweet home!
