I found the box just yesterday
in the attic in a corner nook
I stood there, hands to my cheeks
wondering if I should even look

I knelt upon the dusty floor
put my hands upon the lid
gathering strength for memories
that till now, I thought I’d hid

My eyes were tightly shut against
the flood of tears gathered there
painful pangs knocked at my heart
I wanted to look but did not dare

I knew what lay inside the box
you were there in every token
seeing them now would only bring back
every lie that was ever spoken

Oh this is wonderful!  A box of memories...tokens of a lost love.
How sad, but, so breautifully written.

As always, you express yourself so well, and, I do relate!

Oh Sharon can I relate to this poem, and felt every pang of pain.  Excellent writing, and I am sure there are many hanging onto painful memories and the box does not necessary have to be cardboard, as compartmentalizing pain in neat boxes in one's mind is just as painful and hard to get rid of, so I took your poem both ways.  Can you tell I liked this one a lot?

Sounds like you should have put him in the box instead of the trinkets!

our minds so cleverly hide
hurt held deeply inside

yet tokens from the past
may painfully recast

scenes once begotten
we thought we'd forgotten

Thank you all for you kind comments. I'm cleaning and throwing out a lot of stuff. This poem reminded me that saving stuff from a hurtful relationship is not a good plan! So out with it!

A vivid description of a moment in time that many can relate to I'm sure Sharon. Sometimes we save things that were best long forgotten. Then again, sometimes reviewing and making the decision to throw out those tokens, can be almost a cleansing feeling many years later. A very contemplative write, much enjoyed!

Best wishes,
/Kit

I dont see anything wrong with keeping momento's of past relationships, its when you put them on a database and start to cross reference the problems start. Very touching write I enjoyed.

*sigh* You express the feeling very well that memories can still hold the pain from lost love. My heart felt your tears for I too have memories though they are only in my mind now. *hugs*

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Sharon I don't usually do this, but I have to refer you to my poem so similar in nature, just from the perspective of making the box. /pip/Forum51/HTML/002301.html
I love this, and it is so true. My box is in my closet, and it is so hard to keep closed.
Memories can be so tough,I could almost want a lobotomy sometimes...

Great write, I see you've read the text (written it in this case) but is the lesson learned ? I hope so.

Sharon-
I like this one lots, and can certainly
relate to hanging onto some of that
painful 'stuff'.  Good for you, for
   saying, 'out with it!'
   Excellent write, my friend.
   Hugs,
