your laughter subsided
tucked away
dropped neatly
in the side of your shoe

but as a quarter
you saved for a phone call home
it falls beneath
the arch of your foot
and gets kicked deeper
closer to your sole

i hope your sole
is solid -- free of holes
and your quarter
stays between your toes
for you may want it soon
to call home...

and when my phone rings
if i dont answer
know that i have merely been detained
in the garden
where i pick fresh flowers
for you...

You wowed me with this one, it is outstanding! I will tuck this one away, but not in my shoe, and read it again later.

Over here in Hawaii they are charging us 50 cents for a phone call...so that was why my sweetheart didn't answer the phone...she was in the garden picking flowers...James

A dime? HA in Houston it takes two quarters, one for each shoe.. so ya don't walk all lopsided. Oh, well that wasn't really the point of the poem now was it? giggle..

I liked it.. smile

1-800-collect.  But then you'd have to be there to accept the charges.  When did things get so complicated?  Should be as simple as picking flowers in a garden.
