Winter Garden
November 20th, 2001
Copyright 2001 Doug Pretorius

The last petal floats along,
on the cold crystal breeze,
flitting back and forth slowly,
carrying our hopes and dreams.
Enough time eventually passes by,
that it gradually descends,
finding its final resting place,
in a white and snowy glen.
The delicate single moment,
that we hold close does arrive,
that petal melts into the snow,
and the smoke fills our eyes.
Coughing and choking we open them again,
and find we're not were we ought to be,
the Winter Garden surrounds us,
and holds us tightly in its trees.
Looking all around this,
wonderful magical world,
we're greeted by our new friend,
who appears to be a giant squirrel!
In this most unusual place,
where nothing seems quite real,
the cool air carries winter's scent,
and we love how it makes us feel.
Grand icy sculptures raise high above,
depicting the Garden's mythic hero's,
frozen forever in this wintery place,
where everything is well below zero.
"We'll make a sculpture of you too,"
the residents sweetly chime,
"You'll have to defeat the Winter Dragon,
but we'll leave that for another rhyme."

Hi Doug!  Great write and a perfect picture of ice sculptures up here in Canada.  Nice to see yet another fellow poet from Ontario here! Surprising how many here at Passions are from Canada...and a lot from Ontario....as I am.

Thank you for a lovely look at something I haven't seen since a child - we don't have much snow or ice here in Arizona.

Oh, I really love this imagery! The magic of winter's frozen delights, and the creatures that scurry about at zero and below....I'll keep this poem with other Favorites.
