~* Happy Thanksgiving My American Friends *~

~*~
First of all before I start this bit of nonsense, I want to sincerely thank RON for this site,
and the opportunity to have made the many friendships I have within this wonderful poetry community.
I am truly thankful for having met you all in these blue pages.

~*~

I figured there had to be more to it,
more, than "Martha’s" pumpkin pie,
a sizzling turkey with all the trimming,
and the harvest decorations that we buy.

Friends and relatives getting together,
all so very glad that they came,
then after dinner, sit around stuffed,
watching a football game.

I never could figure out why, in the U.S,
Thanksgiving was always so darn late.
Ours is a whole month earlier,
so it was kind of hard to relate.

So this Canadian gal did a little research,
and I want to share what it is I found.
I have most of the answers now,
armed with history notes abound.

The whole idea of Thanksgiving,
came from Europe when a harvest was good.
They gave thanks for their successfulness,
and of course, the abundance of food.

In Europe, the Cornucopia was invented,
a goat’s horn filled with fruit and grain,
and when Europeans came to Canada,
they simply started the tradition up again.

In 1578, Martin Frobisher, held a ceremony,
to give thanks for his safe journey here,
and as other settlers arrived in Canada,
the "thankful ceremony" was held every year.

In 1621, the Indians helped the Pilgrims out at
Plymouth Rock, or "The New World" they say...
That's how Thanksgiving started in the States,
And of course it's carried on even today.

But in 1750, Americans settlers journeyed north,
deciding to separate from all the rest,
In Nova Scotia they started the "harvest" celebration,
And "Thanksgiving" was then put to the test!

So this is the story of how it all started,
French explorers began holding Thanksgiving each year.
It was American settlers, and the French who made,
Canadian Thanksgiving, at least now that’s clear.

In 1879, Parliament declared October 6th the Canadian holiday,
and turkey became the food of choice once a year.
In 1863, Lincoln declared yours the 4th Thursday in November,
so you could celebrate it with that American cheer.

Now if you really think about all of this,
this holiday is so very easy to figure out.
Canada just had a shorter growing season,
Our harvest was earlier, that’s all that it’s about!

~*A Very Happy Thanksgiving To You And Yours *~

I hope that you all enjoy your turkey dinner!

O yuh I bet you are loving that history lesson Walt!  LOL   Beats me, you guys are having turkey and the Christmas decorations are already going up here, is there something wrong with this picture? LOL, well if I go across the line I can get turkey an extra time - now there's a thought    Thanks Walt.

Why thank you, Mysteria - What a wonderful way to greet my morning - as I start my housecleaning and baking frenzy for Thursday's feast...

Don't you think it would make a whole lot more sense for the USA and Canada to meet in the middle? You guys can have your holiday two weeks later and we in the USA can have ours two weeks earlier - Then the entire continent would be Thankful together - Makes sense, doesn't it??

I love this time of year - I'm fortunate enough to be living right in the midst of pilgrim land, with Plimoth Rock and the Mayflower II just a stone's throw away... For any who want to indulge in a little turkey-day history lesson, here's a good link..

Thank you sooooo much, Mysteria - for taking time to write this wonderfully heartfelt poem... Now - about those recipes...

This wasn't really a "nonsense" poem. Parts of it were funny, but the rest was a great history of North American Thanksgivings. Very well done, Mysteria! I'm thankful to know you and everyone else here from Passions.

God bless America, my home sweet home.

Thank you, Mysteria, for this wonderful Thanksgiving Day greeting. I think it's great that we have this special day in different months. It reminds us twice to be thankful.
A Thanksgiving Day once a month, for everyone on Earth, complete with sumptuous feast and surrounded by good friends, might really turn this world around.

This is fun, thank you. I guess it would be silly to wish you Happy holiday, as yours is over already. ButI am very thankful for you and all my other friends at this great place.

Sharron,
There is so much to be thankful for this year, and one of them is your friendship. Your exuberance has lit up many of my days, and this poem is an example of your efforts and your contribution to this forum.
I also am so glad that you mentioned the moderators, who must spend immeasurable hours reading and commenting on the poems. I also appreciate their efforts. Marge, for one is all over the place. Every time I open a forum, there she is, not only with comments, but her own poetry.
Thank you Sharron for the history of THanksgiving, which I will pass on to my children.
Very nicely done
Liz

I see we have a lot of very thankful folks in the forum, and that sure makes me very happy.  There are so many in here giving so much of themselves and their time, the biggest one being RON who donates the site, and absorbs these costs from his own pocket to allow us this safe haven to post our thoughts, so again, a special Thanksgiving prayer for Ron. There are those who are our constant daily reminders of the strength of friendship in this forum like Marge, Sunshine, Sea, Elizabeth, (who I bet post something uplifting for everyone every day!) Aside from the forum, I am thankful we are all alive, healthy, and can share ourselves and what we have to offer with others.  Again, Happy Thanksgiving all, and thanks for reading my wish to you!

*giggling* now I know what the rest of the story is....and here I thought we celebrated earlier then they did because we are colder and have shorter growing season. *giggling* live and learn. Thanks, Sharon, this is delightful. I love it.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Well...indeed, there is something new to be learned everyday.  You have given me more information that I ever knew about our Thanksgiving holiday ~ and I've lived in the US for 38 years next month!  ~*~winks~*~
Thank you for sharing this wonderful holiday message with us...and rest assured when I sit down to give "thanks" tomorrow over turkey and dressing...I will raise my glass of White Zin and toast you, my friend...and when the prayers are offered before the feast begins...you will be one of the special treasures I will offer my thanks for.
Hugs and much love to you, always, ~*~dawn~*~

Dearest Mysteria~ Thank you so much. I had the warmest homecoming from the warmest of hearts! I just got home last night from....
Your beautiful country. I can honestly say that my Thanks Giving has a whole new meaning. I thank God for people that open my eyes to the beauty of the world. And Niagara is one of the most awe inspiring places there is. I'm so glad I visited before I left this world. And will go back to visit other parts of your warm hearted country!!! Thank you and I hope that you'll enjoy the gorgeous weather while it lasts. Your poem was very enlightening. I'm so happy you are our neighbor!!!

Sincerely,
Regina

P.S. The pic you sent me was very scary indeed LOL!!!

It's all in the mind
Except for what's in the heart.

Yanno, I have to say openly and honestly that Americans in general are the warmest, friendliest, and caring individuals I think I have had the honor of meeting.  However, even luckier, the cream of the crop seem to gravitate to the blue pages of Passions, and I wish to thank you all for your kind words and I am mighty thankful I met you all.  Again, Happy Turkey Day!
