When Kevin turned sixteen years old
Still on his mama's knee
His mother asked her little son,
"What do you want to be?"

He put his bowl of pablum down
And spoke out loud and clear
As spittle dribbled down his chin,
I WANNA BE LIKE BALLADEER!

His mother laughed so hard she dropped
The youngster on his rear
And said, "Son, that's impossible...
There's just one Balladeer!"

In school the teachers asked him
For the choice of his career..
His answer always was the same..
I WANNA BE LIKE BALLADEER!

They said, "Son, be a astronaut,
A physicist or such,
A writer or a surgeon...
Lawyers, too, can earn quite much.

Set your sights on just one goal
Then strive to perservere
Don't dwell on the impossible..
There's just one Balladeer!"

One day along the boardwalk
With a sharp stick in his hand
Kev was passing time by drawing
Pictures in the sand.

A small lamp washed upon the shore
And Kevin rubbed its side
Releasing one humongous genie
Which had been inside.

"I thank you, master", said the genie
In a roaring voice.
"For freeing me I'll grant you any
One wish of your choice."

"Oh, boy!", laughed Kevin. "Now, at last
My destiny is here!
Good genie, grant me this one wish..
I WANNA BE LIKE BALLADEER!!"

The genie dived back in the lamp!
Kev watched him disappear,
Saying, "Throw me back into the sea!
There's just one Balladeer!!!"

He struggled hard throughout his life.
He studied till he dropped.
He worked his fingers to the bone
with drive that never stopped.

He gave it everything he had
To emulate his peer
But always came up way too short
Of matching Balladeer.

An old man now, still sitting on
The lap of his poor mama
He said, "I'm off to India
To find that Dally Lama!"

"No smarter man lives on the earth.
I'll travel to Cashmere
And force that guy to tell me
How to be like Balladeer!"

So off he went to India...
He scaled the mountains tall
And found the Dali Lama
In a small cave in the wall...

He said, "Please help me, Lama guy.
My end is drawing near.
I must fulfill my final goal....
I WANNA BE LIKE BALLADEER!!!"

The Lama smiled and said, "All right...
Catch moonbeams in your hand...
Speak words of love so sweet that
Only angels understand...

Make rainbows change their colors
Make the lion lose its roar
Cause the morning dove to call your name
Bid Hell to close its door...

Make every female on this earth
Feel like she's Gueneviere
With Lancelot riding by her side....
And you'll be Balladeer."

Poor Kevin stumbled from the cave
Into the setting sun.
He knew the secret now and knew
That it could not be done..

He was never seen alive again.
His time is done, I fear…
This foolish lad who thought that he
Could be like Balladeer.

They say on nights when winds grow fierce
And dark clouds hide the moon
A low moan echoes through the hills
In melancholy tune..

It is a haunting, sad refrain
Too low for human ear…
Poor Kevin screaming out in pain,
I WANNA BE LIKE BALLADEER!!!!

As referee, self-appointed though I may be, I have counted to 10 and Kevin has been counted out.  Knockout and the Championship belt to the one and only (thank God above)

I see the battling feud begin.
I can't help but wonder who will win?
Will it be Balladeer
or Kevins voice will we hear?
I'm glad I'm watching from the sidelines
as the two duke it out in rhyme!!
Oh but then again I wish it would be
that Balladeer was playing games with me
Should Kevin win this little spar
We'll have a drink on me at his favorite bar
So now here I am, to sit and wait
and thats the part I really HATE!!

Let the games begin.....lmao!!

On the wings of words our spirits fly....and our souls are free.

And with one punch, it is decided...or is it?  Gotta feeling Kevin's not going to be smart enough to lay there and play dead.  Round two, Kev?

I do believe our referee
is in somebodys pocket
The only way I wont reply
Is if balladeer locks it
Dont count me out in far less time
Then he took to reply
Ill gladly repost with a rhyme
Allow me friends to try...

just poet to poet in each given round

In ancient age I have to smile
for youth does take to learn awhile
it is not age that makes the man
only the way he turns his hand

and fraid I am that you won't find
Balladeer a fool in age divine
I can only shake my head in sorrow
for youth may find, there is no tomorrow

Gentle smile for us old folks

Balladeer~
This is such a refreshing match ...
I don't want to see it end ...

You wear the belt of Champion Ink
but let the young one 'think'
That he can rise up off the mat,
brush the dust off of his rear ..
He may roar and strut a little-
but that won't make him
THE GREAT BALLADEER~

What fun~

Balladeer,
Well, that was quite a punch,
Kevin was really had for lunch.
But I sense he still has breath,
I'm sure he'll fight to the death.

So grab your salad, pull up your chair,
Kevin is going to respond to his dare.
Lock the door and call it a day,
The boys are gonna really play.

Round one is done
Two poets testing mettle
The fat lady still to sing
The dust still to settle

Floating like butterflies
Stinging like bees
Two poetic punsters

There is only one of you that is a fact, and Lady In White's comment about covers it.  There is no one - no one that can do that as you do Michael, but you are certainly the mentor to many to give it a try.  For if there were no Balladeer, that beautiful, perfect cadence would not be written by those that respect and know, there is only "One Balladeer"!  This was awesome my friend, awesome!

And Balladeer ate his spam bit more
Like sailor Popey his spinage before
It sure did strenghten him to fight
And Kev, will he be back? he just might

I'm sitting exited and thrilled in first row
Is it too late for a white towel to throw?
You killed him already not fair Balladeer
Should've kept him alive just kicking his rear

But youth is so very unpredictible you see
He'll lick his wounds and will come after thee
Oh jee I just love to see theatre in the flesh
But have some mercy for him on your next smash

He has yet to learn a lot you see Deer
Youth is reckless don't know what to fear
He's learning and learning you see that right?
But being YOU? Well only in dreams he might

your writing never ceases to amaze me but i don't envy you at all.... i mean, i have a hard enough time living up to my image.... lol.... i can't imagine stardom... to be worshiped and adored would be great, sure, and i've LOVED it, believe me, but geeeezzzz........ to have people wanting to BE like you... well, hell, lemme ask you this.... what if you screwed up? how would you be able to face your public??

awwww never mind.... that's ridiculous.... i'm sure you've never screwed up and even if you did, nobody'd even notice... ROFL!!

so....all this to say, you're a damn fine writer, Michael and i'm very proud to know you.......
