THE PUPPET SHOW

Copyright 2001 by: Mark V Sheldon

The stage is set.
The people wait.
The House lights dim.
The wooden representatives motion one another.

The red curtain
rustles behind them
but reveals nothing
behind the scenes.

The show begins.

Their mouths move up and down
like their eyelids batting, average
in appearance, lips purse, strings
pull at our hearts and pocket
US
with popcorn serenades and pieces
of big apple pie.

Their mouths move with Nutcracker finesse
except for that one
in the spotlight.
A string must have snapped from the tension –
his smile is crooked.

Do you see the other one, there
in the shadows?
He keeps moving just out of sight.
He hasn’t spoken in a while,
but it sounds like he’s in the spotlight.

Where do the voices come from?
Ignore the man behind the curtain.
What man?

Exactly.

This show reminds me
of one I saw
ten years ago.
The characters are familiar, and
the plot is the same.

But I can’t remember the ending...

I understand you completely. If only it were just a show, not reality. If only there were....I could drive myself nuts digging into this. Maybe some day I'll post one I wrote five weeks ago, The Needle In The Haystack. You would understand it completely.

Mark - this is a wonderfully interesting read. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Chris

Elizabeth, then I have succeeded.  Thank you for the read & reply.

Kacy -- glad to know I'm not the only one...  Let me know when you post your poem -- I'd enjoy understanding you completely as well.

Chris, thank you kindly.  To stimulate my reader to think/contemplate, if but for a moment, is a very gratifying reward.  Thank you for the read and comment.

Richard, I'm honored my poem interested you.  Thank you.

Sy:  ...only good things, it seems.  Thank you.

Ah..."The Puppet Show"...{{finally  }}
With strings unseen and at times too clearly seen.

Ah..if we could only choose not to watch it and get disgusted by all its fabrications and "wooden representatives motion" and smiles.

Thank you

My Melody, I thought you might enjoy this -- I'm glad you found it.  Remember:  we can always choose, but will we learn?

Nancy:  tickling your thoughts is my pleasure.  Thanks for stopping by.

I wonder sometimes who is pulling the strings. This show is played over and over in our lives. Very well done.

Indeed, Startime...  It's usually the same small group of people through historic heritage and genetic lineage.  Thanks for the read and comment.

There will always be the wooden nutcrackers of high apropose. And always someone...like Marilyn Monroe to entertain them. The trick is to be the ones...outside in the street. And make it through this world. As usual...great ponderment.

Sincerely,

Know why I loved this post?  Because it reminded me of one of the most special times in my childhood, when I would go to the library for the puppet show on Saturday afternoon.  Sometimes I would just watch, sometimes participate. I had forgotten....

The last one had no ending, Mark....that's why we have a sequel. Hopefully we can make the curtain fall a final time....excellent writing, sir.

Regina, unfortunately "the music" isn't nearly as beautiful in this show...  Thanks for the thoughts & reply.

Kay, I'm glad this brought back some positive memories for you.  Thank you for the pic of "the one in the spotlight."  I hope you're still filled with positive wonderment...

Balladeer, I think you're right, and I question if such shows always end with a somber epilogue...  Thank you very much for your read and impressions.  I am honored.
