Blues Tripping
(from Boyhood Tales)

Blues tripping
down through Southern Mississip
peed on a telephone pole
for lack of something better to do
laughed when a car full of shouting
whistling kids drove by
really miss those summers
with nothing to do

Slow shuffled
ditty-bopped down the asphalt
Elvis tune dancing in my ear
then 'strolled' with the best of 'em
laughed at a stray thought
stuck my thumb out
waved it at the cars passing by
hoping no one would stop

Thumbs hung on the pockets of my jeans,
white T-shirt
socks
black penny-loafers
duck-tail and curly locks
blowing in the wind
summer of '59,
my sixteenth
life was good
in America

Fast forward - zoommmm
the navy flys by so fast
almost have to think about it
to see the world I saw
when I saw it -

Marriage - kids -
some things work
some things don't
pause for reflection here…

Pause a little longer -
still haven't seen my face
and its fading even so

Blues tripping -
Slidell Louisiana
the bar is one big room
built on stilts
above brackish green bayou water

It shakes every time someone moves
sways more like
improves the motion in slow dancing
makes you hug each other tighter
(it's the excuse anyway)
while Uncle Merle sings
Today I Started Loving You Again

Beer flows
I wake up in bed
with a woman I don't remember -
"who are you" she asks
we both laugh -
make love again
say goodbye -
forever

The ground rumbles
in Southern California
I'm tossed from the bed
like so much dirt
being shook from the sheets

The walls sway
I live on the fourth floor
of this dilapidated hostel
near Sunset and Vine -
God help me
if I ever get to the ground
I'll never sleep above it again

People died
a hospital collapsed
parts of the freeway fell
glass littered the streets
Los Angles - late sixties

Blues tripping
down through Southern Mississip
summer of '59
my sixteenth
life is good in America -
wonder what it has in store
for me?

Honestly, this was a great memory trip. I've slid into Slidell before, tho I never was stilted there. And I was there(in THE Valley) for the 60's Rock 'n Roll, both the music and the shakers.  Seems like I've travelled 'round and back again, and somehow always end up in that SF Valley again....even if only in memories and poetry like this. A bit of nostalgia can be fun. And funny thing is, here I sit in a house on stilts...in Alaska, frozen to the ground for a while longer.
