Texas

I walked downtown, in Austin-
My outlook slightly bitter.
Of  how my life is hasting by...
Then paused to reconsider.

I walked into the Capitol-
And stopped to look around,
At children laughing happily
It was a soothing sound.

There in the rotunda-
As I gazed up at the star-
It seemed as if a ghostly voice,
Whispered from afar...

"You really are quite privileged-
To be a Texan, born....
And raised beneath her endless skies,
To wake in her this morn.

To ride her grassy prairies-
To drive across her plains.
To walk her sacred battle fields,
Where glory still remains.

The Alamo, and Fannin's tomb-
Jacinto's battleground...
The pride of calling Texas, home-
The legends which abound.

The brilliance of the sparkling stars
On a crisp West Texas night..."
I stopped and thought of all of this,
And smiled, and said, "You're right"!

Then I pulled back in the traffic
Which not long ago I'd cursed.
As I headed for 290-
Drivng South along North First.

And I saw the lovely Lone Star Flag-
Whip boldly up above...
And said, "Texas, you're a lady-
Whom I well, and truly love".

Ah, such a nice Texas love song, one that will surely make all those old cowboys cry. Thanks for sharing this.

Great tribute. I get goosebumps every time I'm in the Alamo. If you haven't yet stand atop Guadalupe Mtn. on the New Mexico Border. It's Texas' highest elevation and a special place.

John, this poem is filled with the love and pride you feel and that gives me incredible pleasure in reading it. Very well done.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

John,

What a wonderful tribute! I have never been to Texas either. I can imagine how beautiful it is.  In about a year I will find out her splendor.. and I can't wait. This was greatlyyyy enjoyed

YeeeeHaaaaaa....Born and bred....many many
memories from all over the state,  North
South, East or West...Father in Road Const.

I will never forget the plains up above
Amarillo....lived in Dalhart, almost in New
Mexico....Mesquite, a few Cottonwoods and
a pile of tumbleweeds....

Most of all...the memories of looking at a
distant town, visible for about 10 miles or
more because it was so flat there.

Transplanted by Naval Service to S. Carolina.
Still there,  still miss my Texas too.

Thanx...I enjoyed this well written poem.
made me very much at home.  I have stood
under that star in the capital bldg at
Austin...It is beautiful.

Thank you John....very much so...

Great poem John. I love Texas, been there a few times. Thanks for the memories.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?
