Sadie Hawkins Knows How to Run

She was the apple of her daddy’s eye
though none in town could see it
Her childhood spent in loneliness
crushed by the shyest spirit

Teased by all her pretty friends
that she would never be a wife
Sadie decided that she would
make jogging her whole life

She ran each day at dawn and dusk
till she won every school prize
But still poor Sadie was so plain
Called ugly in everyone’s eyes

As she grew older, she still ran
and was the butt of many town jokes
but twice a day Sadie whizzed by
Spurred by the laughter of town folks

The years passed and Sadie grew older
and sadly so did her poor dad
He worried the family business
would be the only family she had

He asked a few fellows in town
if they would offer Sadie a date
But when he saw the fear in their eyes
he knew he’d never find her a mate

Unbeknownst to her dad
Sadie had an ugly streak
demanding and mean to all
Making even the strong feel weak

Some may say it was her way
to compensate for her life
Some would say it was the lack
of a man who’d make her is wife

Poor Mr. Hawkins devised a plan
to offer his whole fortune of gold
to the man that Sadie caught
that would forever have and hold

He advertised a foot race
in every village and town
The only rule he wanted was
that Sadie had to run her man down

Times were tough for all you see
so the money was quite a draw
About a hundred men showed up
to claim a woman they never saw

Upon the podium that day
stood Sadie and her loving dad
And when the contestants viewed her
each felt he had gone mad

Her hawkish eyes were deep set
in a hatchet face pasty white
The men were now afraid
this wasn’t a run but a flight!

They glanced at each other
as the gun signaled them to go
and each one took off like a shot
hoping he wouldn't be too slow.

They scattered to the hills
listening for the starter’s gun
that signaled Sadie to begin
her final spinster’s run

Sadie took off at a leisurely pace
there were only a few she spied
A few likely grooms that she wanted
to stand always by her side

One young man took off like a rabbit
flinging himself down a hill
Sadie jogged quickly after him
using all her running skill

Others seeing she’d sighted him
jumped behind bushes and rocks
One ran so fast, he lost his shoes
and then he lost his socks.

Through the forest they all ran
as Sadie drew near to her prey
It was then her victim tripped a guy
and quickly slipped away

Not deterred by that cheater
Sadie turned and sought second best
she tracked him down as he was
running backward heading west

The look in his eyes was vivid
like the eye of a fox in a snare
and as Sadie reached her groom
all he could do was swear.

The wedding was well attended
Drinks flowed freely for all
as townsfolk toasted the couple
the groom started to bawl.

His sobbing could be heard
well into the morning hour
but suddenly there was a hush
in the honeymoon bower

Days past and no one saw
the couple out and about
They scratched their heads and wondered
if he’d died without a shout

After a week they couple emerged
smiling as love birds do
and all the single women in town
stared to see what love could do

For there was Sadie Hawkins
docile as any spring deer
Her man stood tall and proud
his eyes free from fear.

The years passed as they often do
Sadie now was the mother of ten
And each year on her anniversary
the maids now all chase down the men

Sadie Hawkins has become a legend
to spinster women far and wide
They travel here to her hometown
running to become a bride.

*giggling with delight* so that is how Sadie Hawkins day came to be. This poem had me rolling with laughter. I love it. I am single but am not sure if love is something for me anymore so I don't bother much even on Sadie Hawkins day. Good luck girls!!!! Give 'em a run for the money.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

This is just so cute. I love it. Very well written story.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

Enjoyed this PDV - really brought back some memories - back when I was in high school (hmmm, was that yesterday...or Y E S T E R D A Y!!) we use to celebrate Sadie Hawkins day every year - dress up and all that and the girls chased the boys, the whole game.  Really had fun!

Thanks for the memories my friend.
