Future Peers – The Debate

bearing scrubbed attitudes and
overloaded egos, stuffed full of
rules and regs,
bones still too young to mantle
adulthood, males pocketing
gangling hands

their counterparts parting quips
in hushed voices, too nervous to
giggle, adopting voices
yet grown into
leaving behind yesterday’s titter
still seen in glossed lips

these were the debaters, then, amassed
to convince volunteering judges
how theories are perceived
even as time quaked beneath them
knowing that Newsweek’s printed seven
days early of arrival date

was their past, tense

so who would be on top of top then
that was the question,
spit polished squeaking clean
only bubble gum gave away the
nervous,
boys praying their voices held
and sharing not a pimple among them

some would seek zeniths, their
stride coming sleekly, others
would find nadir notes steeped
blankness into preparation
where did it go anticipation
squirreling their guts

volunteers are never paid enough to
give losers some hope to cling
to, none of them seeing
2, 3 or 4 as a possible choice, all eyes
on 1

how bravely they grapple with topicality
this ab(stract)use of mental
aberration, overall being fresh in
their anticipation,
unlined faces feeling future
in the breeze, even as they deal topically
with this most recent explosion
of their innocence

how well they flamed red
in their vivid white
emotions to see the blue
of tomorrow’s dreams

competition claimed its end
they gamely shook hands
and began the process of
packing it all in,
on to another round, but the
question begged of itself and came forth

what are your future plans

in day’s end,
the volunteer judge came out the
winner, for
each and every child this day
is planning a future,
brightly

America, you’re in good hands….

WOW!!! Judging is tough, and no one wants to leave a 'loser' in any contest. But they are already winners just for trying. It's a tough world out there, and I for one, am happy to see SUNSHINE smiling so brightly today.

Hip hip hooray!

'Deer, this poem is nothing to the quality of young people that we can see, if we only look...thank you!...

Yes, Noah, many of them still have their dreams, and it is up to the rest of us to make sure they have a good world to bring them in to...thank you!

Midnitesun, you are so right...they are all winners, and again, it is up to us to make sure that they gain everything they pursue...

Startime, if this poem makes you think? Then I've done my job!  Thank you!

Tiersdin, I've seen your work.  An excellent from you is a badge worn with pride.  Thank you...
