Was it the harvest moon?
   or the tequila sunset?
that had me playing leapfrog
   over prostrate tree logs,
howling at the full golden moon
sounding more like a lovesick loon
   than any midnight wolf tune.
That moon was up close and personal,
sporting an in-your-face kind of look.
I was sure I could touch it if I just got higher.
   So I did.
We were already camped high in the western sky
underneath the glory of Mt. Palomar Observatory,
where we had waited all day to look through the scope
but there was no hope, it wasn't to be,
it was reserved for astronomers with a PhD.
We decided to camp that night beneath the dome
and view the sky that the stars called home
and take a short siesta before traveling next day
to Mexico for a fiesta and some sunny play.
Long about midnight there rose such a clatter
we turned around to see what was the matter.
When what to our startled eyes should appear
but 500 hundred bikers with many kegs of beer.
The hootin and hollerin lasted all through the night
"Twas loud enough to give all the Deadheads a fright.

Meanwhile, back at our camp I was jumping and cavorting like a silly scamp leaping over fallen logs, Olympian style trying to capture the moon's beguile. When suddenly I tumbled head over heels and rolled down the hill 'midst laughter and squeals. My landing was rough, but I acted real  tough 'Till I tried to stand up and my ankle gave way. I howled out loud, but not at the moon I have to say. My friend carried me back up the hill, when the neighbors heard about the spill they gave up their wine ice to ease my whining. By that time my moon man had disappeared, the sun came up hot and the horizon appeared. And now every harvest moon I  wonder why I couldn't fly high enough to kiss that moon man's face, but instead ended up on my own.
What a disgrace!

What wonderful memories these are Kacy. You sure have done some living in your time. And when they gave you their wine ice for your ankle, did they give you some wine to go with it (for medicinal purposes of course...only medicinal!!!). I love the way you write of your adventures

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

A full moon, bikers, a rocky bed and a jug of wine sounds more exciting than "a loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thee" for a poem.

Death comes not when we cease to breathe, but when we cease to dream.

*giggling* an almost romantic evening. The poem is perfect and had me sighing until the bikers came along  ...I love the moon too. Your adventure was a delight to read that left me giggling. I love it.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Tracey, yes, they also shared their fine vine juice as well, and some bikers came over and offered beer and some herbal cheer.

Rusty K, LOL, it is definitely a funnier, maybe more bizarre combo. Glad you enjoyed.

Sandra,   You just have to be there on a full moon night.  But the last time I was ther, the lights of San Diego now cast such a constant glow it's harder to see the stars and moon in all, there glory.

Seymour, glad you enjoyed. I just started another mountain climbing one. It may take a month to write, coming from memory lane early 70's, climbing Masada at sunrise in Israel.

Startime, giggling here too, It still had a romantic flavor to it, but that's 'nother story....that won't ever be told.
