.
Her hair was red/blond/basic black
And now she's never coming back
Again. You met her on a holiday
You can't recall without her there.
She's moved along and left you holding
Empty air. Empty rooms and empty halls
Fill the days you can't recall
And left an empty bed alone
Beside you.

You met her on a summer day -
Or was it winter -
Who can say?
Like falling leaves you fell
One as the other.
And then one day
She said goodbye
Without a word.
She said goodbye.
Her eyes had someone else inside.
You stood there trying to decide
Which lip was smiling.

Now every girl you see instead
And every time you turn your head
And all the names of every street
The colours of the sky at night
The act of dawn, the smell of white
Whatever tells you you're alive
Tells you that you're dead inside.
You wake up with the afternoon so you don't
Have to feel alone. And then one day
She's gone inside. You bring her back and let her slide
Away again.

Now mornings fade from grey to green
And somewhere in the days between you
Catch an eye.
She catches you.
And spends a night or maybe two.
The hallway and the living room.
The shower and the kitchen floor.
What else had they existed for?
Her altar hips, your feral lips,
Her parted thighs, your tongue inside,
The I-love-you's that were your guide.
You bring her back and let her slide
Away again.

Now every scent of every flower
Every early morning shower
And all the songs on every street
The colors of the sky at night
The act of dawn, the smell of white
Whatever tells me you're a man
Tells me you're alive again
Beside me.

is this another song?
it seems like it might be.
i love that 'brings her back and lets her slide away again' line.
that and the description of the apartment and those other delicious bits.

Wow, pretty awesome writing here. I'm really enjoying your poetry. It flows along with a lilt, and such great expression.

There is always something there to remind us of what once was.  I thoroughly enjoyed this passion packed poem in all it's agony.
