DEVIL NIGHT
(a Halloween lyric - written back in June of 1980)

I met him on a moonlit night --
There was trouble in my head;
He came in through my window
And he danced around my bed.
He said, "You've prob'ly heard about me,"
Then he laughed with mock surprise,
"You mean you've never heard the stories?
No matter, child, they're lies."
There was a strange secret in his eyes.

He said, "From where I come I am
The mighty Lord and King."
He slowly smiled and watched me
Through the dazzle of his rings,
Then he touched my hair and whispered
Like a gentle, cooing dove,
"Come away with me and be my Love;
I'll give you all the stars that shine above."

(Chorus
(He said,) "I am the Star of the Morning --
I am the Father of Light --
I am the dawn's bright adorning --
Greatest in power and might!"
And he came for me that night.

Confusion flew around me;
His presence made me weak.
When I felt his breath upon me,
I could no longer speak.
Oh, would morning never come,
And break this evil trance?
He took me from my bed and He whirled me in a dance,
Said, "It's only fair to give me a chance."

So strong and braced with ev'ry jewel,
Around me, were his arms;
But as he spoke they tighter grew,
Like snakes who hear no charms.
"We'll do all the things that please us,"
He said, "Things that you don't know."
I cried out the name of Jesus,
Cried, "Devil, let me go!"
And quickly he was gone, through the window --

Chorus:
(Saying -- etc., then

Look out for the 'Star of the Morning' --
He'll say he's the Father of Light --
Oh, I'd never had any warning,
And he came for me that night --
He came for me that night.
~~~~~  ~~~~~
A folksy ballad about the night the Devil whirled in for a visit.  4/4 time, key of a-minor.
