The Letter – What Is In The Heart – Finale – Part 12

There came a day unto her
she went to her burled wood box
from the chain she took the key
and turned it in the lock

                        she read again her letters
from the love of her life
then looked upon her wedding ring
for ever to be, his wife

she thought again of the son she bore
of his need to find the man
who was to him his father gone
then left to search all lands

her maid had stayed by her side,
with her lady gazed o’er horizons vast
until she succumbed, now with death belonged
lo all these long years past

now she alone had to face this time
                        held aloft this letter sent
neither the hand of the man she loved
nor of the son that went

but in the script of a woman
who had loved her son so dear
she read again the words aloud
so as if her spirit should hear

“My Dear Lady, the Light, the Life’s blood
                        of the man I held
please read these words I would send
for I would relate the tale

                        I found your son a’wandering
                        his countenance so very pale
                        he rambled of some story
                        about the seas he sailed

                        his fever ravaged his spirit
his soul would not be bound
he looked for a man, ‘though surely
                        this man was never found

while in the grasp of this fever
his eyes burned a brown so true
and then he spoke of his M’mere
so, Lady, I write to you,”

The Lady oh, she read the words
                        her heart was twisted, sore
she knew without her reading here
                        her loves were gone e’remore

“My Lady, the Light, the Beacon
                        a confession, please, read on
I believe the man your son did seek
was the father of your son.

Several years gone since the time
a man came to our shores
he spoke of lovely, handsome lands
and then he spoke of more

he spoke of a Lady, his true love
those who heard, were sore, indeed
that a man should be so blessed, ‘tis true
they would rob him of his seed

late one night under skies so dark
                        the scoundrels lay in wait
they very near killed your love
so filled were they with hate

                        ne’ermore did he speak of
                        the lands he left behind
for the very beating he took
                        left him bereft of mind”

The Lady felt her tears falling
her Love, near beat to death
                        still, the words were calling
as she read, she held her breath,

“The man you called your husband
                        knew nothing of his past,
                        my mother gave him comfort
and in turn, my life, he grasped

he died soon after my day of birth
his bones rest now in a grave
years passed, we mourned ever his worth
but a few keepsakes we had saved

                        one small treasure, this emblem
‘tis his seal you know, m’dear
and then, these scraps of paper
must be your words, he held ever near,

                        ‘M’sir, m’love, my dear heart
‘tis only a matter of days
before you return to my dear heart
that we would share our loving ways’

for though he could not remember
he still knew the love of his life
and he would have returned to you
for you were his truthful wife

I knew your Son, though he knew me not
I could see the love in his eyes
for I carry the brown of our father’s seed
and I cried when my brother died

so with great sadness, O  m’Lady,
it is with heavy heart I write
but your husband and son are here
and I hold their memories tight”

With a cry, her heart always knowing
the Lady walked down to the Sea
“Come and take me, my husband”
and a dove cooed, “Walk with me.”

Thank you all for your patience in the postings of this series.  It evolved on its own, and sometimes, the Muse who guided the pen, played a bit of hide and seek.

Dear Lady; I, like others have been caught up in this tale of love and loss...but, in doing so, have also watched you pen quite a masterpiece!  This series is truly remarkable, and never will be forgotten by this reader, as well as many many others.  Although I know we had all hoped for a happier ending...but, I believe this one is just 'perfect'.  As we know they don't always live 'happily ever after'.  I cannot thank you enough for the enjoyment you have given so many with this story.

Oh My! You not only made me cry but you came up with an ending I never would have suspected in a million years.  I thought the ending was going to be that a poor, lonely old woman and maid, (like in Sunset Boulevard) just fade into reading the letters again, with no answer as to where her husband or son had gotten to.  Oh my!  There is a daughter though!  Well, then...now is she coming to meet her, is she going there (nope, our lady is now too old), perhaps this is another series about the adventures of the daugther? Pleeeeeease??? Oh Lady, thank you for this series, now may I suggest you write a book and let us know when it is published, so we may buy it. Mz. Steele, look out "Lady is in town!" BRAVO.
