Tapping lightly with his cane,
He’s know here,
By reputation and name,
He’s a friend of another
He’s been here,
With her husband and brother,
Just an old family friend,
Who’s come here,
Beyond sadness of their end.
Tapping lightly at the door,
Standing there,
As if was the time before.
No difference in his style,
Standing there,
She left him waiting awhile.

When finally went to open the door,
He stood there without a smile as before,
Greetings and salutations softly said,
Condolence for the living passed the dead.

For some reason she trusted his manner,
Knowing he hadn’t come trying to cheer,
Happy always was something he did lack,
Stern faced and dressed entirely in black.

Inviting him in she offered a chair,
Politely refused and he just stood there,
From an inner pocket two letters came,
Both of them handwritten bearing her name.

With a courtly bow he turned to depart,
Those words written did strike deep to her heart,
One from her husband, one from her brother,
Both of them said the same as the other.

“Receiving this letter I must be dead,
that’s the only reason it would be read,
all I can do for you after this end,
is give you aid through an old trusted friend.”

The reading was brief it did not take long,
But when she looked up she found he was gone,
He had not remained for her thanks or tears,
But had taken some of her pain and fears.

Perhaps fictional, sir, but the intent of striking at the heart of the matter was done very well, indeed...

a good read.  Thank you!

Thank you, Sunshine
Your words are kind,
I may continue this, making this as a sort of
Beginning.
I may end this, leaving it for the few readers
To perhaps ponder;,
What society needs?
