Haunted Eyes

Quietly seated on a chair
Her head bowed low
Weighted down with care
Hoping no one would know

Her name is called
She lifts her head
“Yes’m” she drawled
Her eyes were set ahead

The pain was there
Written on her face
The haunted stare
The need for space

Tears welled up inside
Seeing this child’s pain
Her innocence had died
What did her father possibly gain

How do you forget haunted eyes
Haunted eyes of a child
How do you forgive a father’s lies
The many times this child was reviled

Surely God must have a place
For one who causes a child’s cries
May he ne’er forget that sweet face
And eternally see those haunted eyes

*sigh* very close to home, for me, this poem came, my friend. I do believe there is a scripture about harming these innocent ones and it being as a millstone about ones neck. There will come a time of reckoning and then the haunted look will again be filled with innocence. *sigh* a powerful poem that touched me deeply. Thank you.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Karen and Noah; I appreciate your kind comments on this poem in which I poured out my heart.  I know too many who have suffered this atrocity, and people need to be more aware of the tragic lifelong effects this has upon a person. Wanda

Chris; Thank you for reading and commenting. I realize this is something we don't like to think about, but we owe the children their continued innocence.  That means we must ALL be aware of this problem.  We dare not turn our backs on this.  Wanda

The abuse of a child is a tragic event which
halts and significantly hampers the growth
of a little human being.  Sometimes very
difficult to understand how anyone can harm
a child.  The sadness is that the anger of
the one who harms this innocent human being
has allowed a person to become nothing more
than an object.  Abuse has no place in our
lives,  but it occurs too often to ever be
ignored.  My heart goes out to all children
throughout the world who have suffered
abuse.  And....yes,  their eyes are not the
same....the light does not burn brightly
within them.

Magnus; Your comment brought tears to my eyes.  I will never forget those eyes of that sweet child.  I went through a whole gamit of emotions then; and whenever it comes to my mind, which is often, I go through all those emotions again. I guess you can understand why I had to write this.  Wanda

This is indeed a sad write. A very tragic story, and one that happens all too often I'm afraid. You have written it very well, as someone else said, with a very haunting quality

Sometimes the harder a piece is for us to write, the more it needs to be written.  I know this must have been a hard one to write and a hard one to share.  Sometimes when we can put pain into words, it helps the healing.  I hope this is the case.  Sometimes a whisper is heard louder than a yell.  This is the tone of this poem, a haunting clear whisper that keeps echoing through our mind.  Dan

W. if you touch one person's heart enough for
them to reconsider their actions before they
act....you have helped at least two people
very very much.  The victim and the person
who wanted to victimize.  Help is too often
never sought before hand,  too much shame
is carried with even just the thought, let
alone the act.  My heart goes to you, and
my prayers go to all children....
