The Devil’s Thunder
By Larry Chadwick

Mom let me go across the highway to play,
She didn’t really tell me how long I could stay.
In just a little while we didn’t have anything to do,
So we wandered up the hill to enjoy our river view.

At the age of six I didn’t really know better then that,
After all, we were just having a little boys chat.
But looking down that hill to the other side,
Was this tempting river that didn’t know how to hide.

So over our shoulder we took one more look,
And crawled through the fence towards the raging brook.
We were exploring and as brave as we could be,
Just my neighbor friend, my little brother and me.

In no time at all we were at the river side,
Playing our games and trying to hide.
But once again we had nothing to do,
So we sat and looked at the skies so blue.

When up the river we began to stare,
And saw great big mountains standing there.
But it was the black clouds that were bothering me,
Lightning was striking, it was really easy to see.

I was sure it was the devils thunder that roared,
All I could think, was oh my Lord!
It was a race to get up the hill, I began to cry,
The devil was after me, I knew I would die.

Down the hill I ran as fast as I could,
With my little brother still in the woods.
Across the highway and through the front door,
Just grateful to see my mother once more.

All I could think, was oh my Lord!"

And then an angel came and scooped me up into
her arms and sheltered me from the storms of life, and her name was Nancy.

Scary stuff for a little boy, and what a grateful sight mom must have been after all that. You write your memories very well.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

I could feel the fear clench your heart and almost taste it as you ran hoping to outrun that which you felt was on your heals. Than I felt the sigh that burst from you as you saw your mother there and knew she would keep you safe. Oh gosh, do I ever love this poem.   BRAVO!!!!

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Tracey,
Relief indeed! Thanks.

Walt,
She would if she had known. Even at six I didn't tell everything I knew!

Startime,
I was so terrified! Thanks so much.

Seymour,
Thanks alot!
