I wrote this to my stepdaughter, Erin. Many say not only do we look alike but we are very much alike in all ways. Such a wonderful compliment they pay me. She is 11 now and I love her dearly.

Love Is Thicker Than Blood

You came to me at sixteen months
while my youngest was sixteen years
They said I was out of my mind
people considered to be peers

I looked into your deep brown eyes
with small arms reaching out to me
Something inside melted with joy
capturing my heart instantly

Many years of love filled with pain
we shared from a man of abuse
Protecting you the best I could
his anger I could not defuse

Leaving I fought to make you mine
that you would not live in such fear
Voices said 'why a stepdaughter?'
not seeing I held you so dear

Now at my side you live your life
with music, singing and laughter
Joy lights your face as we share love
my sweet little brown eyed charmer

We still shed tears from time to time
as feelings pour forth in a flood
Our closeness all can clearly see
that this Love Is Thicker Than Blood

Karen; Our daughter camae to us at 5 weeks.  I have such a wonderful relationship with her, and I fully understand what you mean when you say, "Love is thicker then blood."
By the way, our daughter is now in her 30's.  This is such a wonderful poem.  Wanda

This is so touching. I'm so glad you have your step-daughter, and she sounds like a charmer. You're absolutely right about love being thicker than blood. I'm much closer to my step-father than my real father. He is the one that brought me up, taught me to ride a bike, and cheered me up when I was unhappy.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

What a wonderful story, and a lucky little girl that you loved her enough to fight for her.
