royal flying corps

I sometimes think
That somewhere on the Somme
A tired  eyes still search and blink
And frozen hands are numb

The farmer tends the quite fields
The soldiers in there trenchs lie
The sunday morning church bell peels
Yoing men prepare to kill or die

High above in Gods clean air
Fragile aircraft twist and turn
The frightened starlaings mass and fly
Young men must  choose : jump or burn

When will it cease
When will the ghosts depart
When we here alive live in peace
When war no longer wounds the heart
arthur

You should not have to explain a poem but i am a poor poet
The concept is that war is so futlile that it never ends. The dead cannot let it.Like some old newsreel that no one watches it carries on unseen
line 12 .Aircrew of the RFC did not have parachutes.
They were considered un-British. In defeat you took your choice .Jump or burn.

*sigh* it is so true that the ghosts of war are never laid to rest. They are there to remind of the horror of war. I can only pray sometime it will end but as our world is today I think that time is a long ways away. My heart goes out to all those who give so much that we may live in peace. Thank you, so very much, for sharing this poem with me today.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Michael, this is an incredible piece of writing and this stanza is very frightening indeed.
No peace is ever perfect, and no war is ever won.
As always, hugs across the pond!  ~Nancy~

And I who walk a harvest field
with eyes that bleed and spirit low
remember wars that never yield
the ones I fight from long ago.

I tip toe into china blue
with peace on edge and find my choice
that in this panoramic view
I take to flight within my voice

Yet, high and low and all around
the kites and butterflies still fly
and all the mourning doves surround
they know, yet know not why…..

Arthur, you inspired me...thank you

Well done Michael. Certainly makes us think. And wars are so futile, so tragic. When will mankind learn to get along? Alas, not in our lifetimes.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?
