Only a Poet

Before man tread a foot upon
the green of grass, the edge of pond
Before a lover ever kissed
a poem already did exist

Before the song of lark was heard
sweet lyrics swirled around a bird
A lovely phrase in silence dwelt
in summer breezes yet unfelt

A waiting thought, an unknown phrase
lies just beneath the morning haze
caressing petals yet unseen
except within a poet’s dream

It was an inner dialogue
with nature’s song, the voice of God
that would in writing gently part
from chambers of a poet’s heart

The spirits called in whispering wind
soft lyrics of a sacred hymn
Its message touched a poet’s hand
and thus a verse on powdered sand

The sweetest phrase, the joy of rhyme
were waiting on the edge of time
for man to set in poetry
the sounds that echo from the sea

Not every soul can reap the bliss
from snowflake’s soft and icy kiss
Nor see the splendor of a dream
and bathe the soul in sights unseen

Imagined visions hypnotize
the etchings in a poet’s eyes
And only gentle words reveal
invisible to be the real

There is a song, a lovely phrase
that lives in autumn’s chilling days
There is an unknown slumbering rhyme
that's waiting since the birth of time

Sigh. This is such a lovely piece. I was going to pick out my favorite lines, but then I would have to pick out the whole poem. Such beautiful words to start my day this morning

*sigh* oh yes, indeed. I love to listen to the music of nature all around me. The beauty of it sooths my soul and gives me visions of magic. I absolutely love this poem. The music that has played in your words matches the very beauty that you share with us. It is so good to read your work again.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Liz--You have touched on a truth in this lovely piece, one that I thought could not be explained in words. I was wrong.  Hugs!

My, oh my!  This was so beautifully written Liz, and these words really are so very true, as you have captured a poet perfectly:

"Imagined visions hypnotize
the etchings in a poet’s eyes
And only gentle words reveal
invisible to be the real".....lovely!

Meter, I believe, is the soul of poetry. You have a gift for meter, a fine inborn gift. It shines through your words as they have been crafted and presented to us!  Thank you for sharing that gift with us.
