Each year, my Lorelei and I make our pilgrimage to the Skyline Drive in western Virginia.  For those of you who live in this part of the country, if you haven't done this lately, perhaps you should again.  It is worth the day.

We drove along the Skyline, in the shade of golds and reds,
Blue sky painting the background, the top down overhead.
We paused at various turnouts, held hands and took our time,
This Saturday framed in autumn, with my lovely Lorelei.

She loves the brilliant rubies, I favor the striking golds,
We both rejoice in the topaz and the riches nature holds.
So we drove along the Skyline, seeking the treasures there,
Me with my lover, Lorelei, in the brisk clean autumn air.

The lavender wild flowers that grew along the winding lane,
Looked painted by an Impressionist, as if by Claude Monet.
The accents to the granite's gray we knew would fade with time,
And so we dedicated this Saturday to a day on the Skyline.

As afternoon approached us and clouds overcame the blue,
We stopped at the Panorama Inn for a lingering interlude.
We reflected on the Skyline's colors, and those we hadn't seen,
And closed the palette with a blackberry sundae, shared by Lorelei and me.

My Lorelei, my navigator, relaxing by my side,
Pointing out sights I nearly missed as we went driving by,
Made this day the perfect way to spend in idle ease,
As we drove along the Skyline in summer's sweet release.

This is a marvelous portrait of the land we love, and the apparent love of two...

Thank you for this early morning gift!

Stunningly beautiful. You brought the whole trip to life giving me a vision of beauty shared with the love of your life. What better way to spend the day than this. MAGNIFICENT. A trip filled with gentle memories. By the way tell your sweet wife I will be looking forward to pictures of you two from your halloween party. *grin* A saucy pirate and his mermaid will be wonderful inspiration to us all.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Love you love you love you
Let me count the ways....
More than the golden leaves,
On a perfect autumn day

...and when the cruel fate of time
Has taken my dear lover away
I'll return to Skyline drive;
Order a Blackberry Sundae (with two spoons)
And remember a sun kissed autumn day.

John,
You always suprise me when you get serious.
And though I've never driven the skyline
Your palette seemed to me perfect. In case you don't know it, your a damn good poet. Love to Lorelie

erk!  My dear, sweet Lorelei - Do you have ANY idea what you having a pet kitty will do to my reputation as a kitty kicker?  Would you settle for a stuffed kitty?  I noticed the neighbor's cat wlaking by the other night.  Perhaps I could stuff it!  Whatta ya think?  *looking around, hoping nobody reads Lorelei's request*

Sy - Thank you for the great compliment.  In addition to being an irresistible siren, Lorelei is a terrific muse.  She inspires me to write when I don't think I can.

Oh my ... what a wonderful tribute to a getaway for two!  Wonderful cadence and rhyme LngJhn, and such pretty visuals, a lovely read!

I was down this direction a month or so ago, though I don't know if I was in this particular location ... it was indeed spectacular in this area, even before the leaves are turning. One of my colleagues asked what the beautiful blue flowers were that we noticed winding down through the middle of the road, but none of us knew  ... do you happen to know the name of them?  Much enjoyed!

Best wishes to you both,
/Kit

Gold and red and relaxation...
Where the hell's my invitation?
Here I am, still stuck in summer
And I consider it a bummer.
No fall leaves, no fine romance...
It would seem that circumstance
Has somehow fouled up my prescription?
Think I'll just have a small conniption. *G*

This is great, LJA... At least I can READ about fall color and forevers. *G*

I feel like I was on a trip (no the kind where you see something new!)  What a beautifully rhymed poem of your love of nature and your wife.  I have never been that way, so thank you for letting me sit in the back seat for a bit with you two.
