State of Suspended Passion

0 posted 2001-10-15 07:24 PM

This gets a bit rough with the dialogue, and maybe it shouldn't even be poetry. I hope someone can make some sense of it, and I apologize if it is difficult to get through.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the swish of October wind
there was a child who stood with heart in hand.
She was blonde innocence defying reality
with her sword held high to God.
She was sweet pondering standing there
just staring at a sunlit sky on a Sunday morning.
I
An elder sister stood to watch in concern
that the serious face was a sign of distress
so i walked in the swish of the wind
to offer my shoulder to the solemn face.
"Are you well, little sister?
Why do you stand there so just gazing upward?"
In a moment of the world forgotten
she looked at me and asked my reasons
for not attending services more often.
Faltering for excuses
I told her I didn't get to visit home
often enough to hear Daddy preach.
To which she said
"Do you have churches where you live now?"
More excuses, like little demons, filled my adult mind,
and I gave them to her as if she should know such things
busy people, long hours, sleepy eyes, and lack of time
all the while feeling ashamed as her still inquisitive eyes stood before me
just dancing and jumping to the anticipation of answers.
Then, exasperated, and feeling like I had given her young mind too much to worry about
I said
"You are a child, Baby, who has yet to live such things or understand.
I
shocked
at the words that I had just said.
Words that I swore I'd never offer up to any younger person who wanted to understand
Words
that I despised listening to when I was too young.
But I swallowed my anger at myself.
Then she, there in my arms, both of us in the swish of an October wind said from her heart and from her Sunday school lesson,
"We are all God's children."
She
smiling
hugged ran off.
I pondered that and realized that she was two different kinds of children
and I, having offered my excuses,
was beneath her in my wisdom and living.
She, the joyful child of God,
And I just the adult making my excuses.
I am many.
Siofra, this is a lovely lesson. So touching and so true. And yes, it is indeed poetry (what the heck were ya thinking, worrying that it was not   )
If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?
Oh, this is every bit as poetic and straightforward as anything else I've ever written, or read. It can be a real shock when we say things we swore we would never say, and then have the wisdom of an innocent child open our eyes.
Siofra,
I think you've found yourself a new fan.  I love the honesty in this.  I like stories, especially ones with lessons taught.  Wonderful.
