The Empty Lawn Chair

Come sit down with me,
we’ll flop here on the grass
and pick up all these lazy apples.

The sky is melting its warm on my hair
and I feel the hum
of water seeping
in the river that runs below the ground
and vibrates against the sky,

and in the hop of grasshopper leaf dance
time opens.

Cup your hands around your ears,
now listen to the other place,
the one with the slanted door
where you keep your fragile wings.

You have sent them tucked in velvet
a time or two
when I thought of you,
all giggled and crinkle nosed with glee,

and now I see
the way an apple tastes for the first time
all new with childhood.

Remember the cradle?
Time has wrought not this drenched tear
from before,
instead it bleeds exuberance into green and crisp

and I take your sweet offering across the chasm
of the back yard and I know
the apple in my hand came from you.

I think if your hand holds it, the apple is all the sweeter for the tasting...

well done, our Martie...
