A priceless polished gem to some, to others not.
A  diamond  ever in the rough,  his mother thought

A quizzical boy,  challenging and defiant too
keeping her on her toes, wondering what to do

Carved of a mold, unique  in his own way.
A diamond  being slowly polished  each day.

Dogs and things of four legs welcome in the yard
A heart of gold, diamond skin, goodbyes so hard

Walks upon the shifting sands in search of treasures new.
Talks of tales, distant roars, he certainly had a few.

Sometimes laughing, sometimes sad, trying to be tough.
Forever caring, not long mad, seldom ever  had  enough.

Living life freely as a wanderer on a darkened trail.
Struggling so to make ends meet, wishing not to fail.

Loving all his children as much as he did each pet.
Challenging right and wrong, making his mother fret.

Playing Pinochle through the night,  waking late to eat.
Talking on a computer phone, resting two tired feet.

Staying ever close to family as each day passed by.
Always watching over things with a caring eye.

You are no longer this diamond in the rough.
A son, brother, father, uncle and cherished friend
Standing beside our Savior in eternal life......

Now a deeply polished gem.

(note):  I read this at a memorial service for
my Brother In Law Ronald Hewitt.  Ron died 2
weeks ago of Terminal Cancer.  He was 53.  He
is missed by us all.  His mother asked me to
write a poem about him.  This depicts him well.
I have a second that I will post shortly.
Please do not feel I am trying to hog the board.
I just want to share.

I hope you enjoy it.

I am truly sorry for your loss...but, I do hope that you can find peace knowing that he is with God, just like you beautifully stated in the last stanza

This is so moving, I'm almost in tears here, the ending is just so beautiful.  You have a powerful gift, thank you for sharing.

Take care,
Melissa~

Thank you Melissa....Yes,  he is with the
Lord....and so much better of than when
he was here in his last days.  We miss him,
but we are happy he is with our Lord.

Yes...this was a moment in my life where I
feel my poetry spoke volumes....I know
Ron would have been pleased with it.

Some things are meant to be shared. My father passed of cancer July 19...I know it sounds trite, but I feel your pain. HUGS.

So beautiful! I actually prefer rough diamonds to polished, as they somehow seem closer to the truth of the stone, as did your heartfelt tribute to your brother-in-law. Peace and condolences, dear friend.

Magnus,
A fitting tribute.  53 is way too young to die.  I am so sorry for your loss.  Your poem I'm sure brought comfort to the family and hopefully to you.

A tribute that I am sure his mother took to her heart.  Well done, Sir...

I won't list your names.....I will say
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all of your kind
thoughts.  Yes,  my Mother In Law very much
treasures this poem.  I have framed it,
given it to her.  It will remain both in
her home and her heart forever.  It will
remain in mine as well.  Thanks again.
You have been so wonderful.
