Dance Of The Raven
By: Noah Eaton
10/14/01

Back in the day when the world was young
Gray Eagle owned the stars, the moon, and the sun
He kept fire and water to himself, from all people he loathed
Leaving all humanity in darkness, in the cold

There came a day when Gray Eagle had a daughter
And a handsome man named Raven fell in love with her
To win her affection, he morphed into a bird of snow-white plumage
And she felt attracted to him and invited him to her residence

So he saw the sun, the stars, fire, fresh water, and the moon
Glimpsing to see if no one was watching, he made his move
Clutching them all by his talons, he rose to the smoke hole
Flying away to the people, making his debouch to his home

Not wasting any time at all, he hung the sun high in the sky
Guiding his flight across the ocean, in its mighty light
Eventually the sun slept, so Raven hung the moon and beaded the stars
Bringing him new light to see, carrying fire and water afar

Finishing his pilgrimage to land, where trees and mountains embower
Narrowing the heart of the land, he dropped the fresh water
Giving birth to rivers and ponds and lakes
Cradling the fire by his slender beak he'd dare not forsake

And the smoke burned his feathers to a charcoal black
And Raven dropped the fire when his beak began to sear at last
Falling against the rocks, sputtering embers into the stone
Streaking the lambent flame into the earth, warming his people from the cold

And Raven rested on a branch, feathers all dark
The Raven became this black bird, wisdom filling his heart
Carrying medicine from great distances for eternal rivet
Dancing of the spirit, for Raven feeds the spirit

I'm going to start saving these for bedtime stories...charming and there is wisdom there between the lines! Thank you again, sweet Noah!
