She worked in a factory, just as her mother did,
sewing garments all day in dim light and no heat.
So tired when she got home, no time to baby her cold feet.
For she had six hungry children waiting to eat.
There was laundry to do, vegetables to prep for tomorrow's stew.
Late into the night she mended mittens and sox,
and tried to wrap a small birthday box for ungrateful me,
while worrying about the war and missing members of the family.

I work in an office, mom's work days are long past.
But like her, I mend mittens and sox to make a dollar last.
The office is heated, and there's a bathroom inside.
If she had worked here perhaps she wouldn't have died
with such bent frail fingers, bad back, unable to speak.
We never spoke much, mom and I. So different we were.
But now that she's gone I find myself talking to her.
I tell her about her grand daughter
who rides her horse through birch and willow trees,
surf's the net with grace and ease,
and as she types faster than me,
declares she'll never work in a factory
or any stuffy old office..let's wait and see.
But she talks constantly, candidly sharing dreams with me.
Some things really do change, you see.
Meanwhile, another war takes another member of the family.

So mom, life really is just like you always said it would be.
There will always be generational changes
as this world spins and turns haphazardly.
Maybe some day one of those changes will be
that no one will lose any members of their family to war.
Let's hope and pray some day there will be peace on earth.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see,
as the world turns, endlessly.

You, too, talk to the past and incantate the future....would love to write with you sometime! This is a portrait...lovely, indeed.

e me if you are interested in a possible "duet"? "

Yes the world keeps turning and some things we have control over and so many things we don't...James

Serenity, what a wonderful invitation! Yes, that would be fun. I haven't done a co-write since I was a kid...during which time my ego allowed me to believe I had invented the whole idea. Uh oh, looking backwards again. And what are you doing up so late at night? My nickname as a kid was night owl.

And James, I figured you were on a sizzling date tonight, ready to burn up the pages tomorrow morning. Thanks for reading my trip through time. My mom died one year ago last week, and I wrote three poems about our not-so-close relationship. The other poems had to hit the trash can...they were not nice poetry or nice thoughts. This one felt right.
