Nearer comes the nightfall At the end of one slave's day He hears his master calling And tries to run away. But the master is in power As he has been from the start. The two are intertwined now And they cannot come apart. Thoughts of freedom fill the slave's mind But he knows that cannot be Though others fought and won the battle He thinks, "It's not to be." If only he could turn back time To when he met his fate He would have chosen differently But now it is too late. The slave now grabs the needle And sticks it in his vein. He cannot resist his master And his master is his bane. The air is slowly growing cold And day's becoming night While the slave is growing tired And will lose the will to fight. God bless America, my home sweet home. |

Elizabeth....this surprised me... I guess poetry is like that though, you think an experience is your own, and you read it and relive it, and there is both relief and anguish in the company of understanding. My applause, to you, dear lady. |

excellent. . . a powerful portrait. . . and an all too real one. . . ------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world. |

You do bring one inside your mind. You seem to experience the very actions of the character. A really grasping piece of work here. I only know one Master...and I hate that anyone ever had to answer to another. Moving verse Elizabeth! Sincerely, Regina [This message has been edited by rwood (edited 10-13-2001).] |

You know, Elizabeth, this head has two faces...I attended a seminar on Diabetes the other day...and when I read this, thought again of what I had learned of that dreaded disease... two heads, indeed... Thank you for this! |

At first, I thought of slavery in the sense known too well. Then it became so clear which master you wrote of. This is a very powerful and true poem. I am glad this has never been my master. |
