       Union Station

Phantoms walk across the great room,
stiff in black coats,
a suitcase in each hand
and those ladies in taffeta
and hats with flowers,
maybe even a parasol,
languid and gracefully poised
waiting for a ticket.

I can see the dusty smile
of the clerk who nods his head,
and yes, he has a stamp,
I can hear it stomping time.

The lady cannot run,
she glides,
her feet like small afterthoughts
below her bellowing skirt,
and the gentleman proper in elbow holding,
soldiers a place in the movement
toward a great and vibrant adventure
of train with elegant dining and sleeping car
of romance in small places
quietly lulled and loved
as towns fly past the window
and cows and see that child waving.

Now
its lovely as a banquet hall for weddings,
and glorious and high beamed still
it is echoing hello and good-bye.
I can hear it eyes wide open
as if time has caught me in a merger.

A new full skirt of beginning
in white lace enters
with a tuxedo love flower dotted youth
and they pass blindly the wooden hallmark
where tickets issued destinations
far beyond a heart’s imagining.

Oh yes I do believe,
I believe in new beginning,
but somehow it hurts to see
time so emptied and proud
and loud with memory,
for I also believe in
the spirit of the past.

A new full skirt of beginning....

Oh, she will smile at that line, I am sure!  This is wonderful!

Martie!  I am so glad you posted this again.  I was not here then, as many others weren't either when it was posted before.  I cannot pluck any particular lines from this as it would make me feel bad for the others that I enjoyed just as much.  I do hope my sister is in here too reading this today!  She and I both love this era...and oh the parasol....love it Martie, thank you!
~hugs and smiles, Nancy~

Oh, Martie, Am I glad that my sister(who shall remain enchantingly nameless), e-mailed me to come read this!! Every line an exquisite pleasure indeed. Chris

Martie - You brought the station so alive with those images of then and now.  I really enjoyed this.

Wow...I was there as I read this beautiful
post.  I could smell the familiar odors,
hear the sounds of trains,  the murmurs within
a large cavernous room....

Thank you for taking me there.

Thank you, Martie  for reposting, I don't believe I read this before...you bring so much of the past back to life.

I've tried to put Martie into my pen...and thoughts just leak away...
I've tried to wax and wane and then...no thought for me would stay...
no one writes like Martie does, a bit of talk and chat...
but our Martie reposts for us, and I thank her so for that...

Big smiles for this!
