The Mentor

how gently you have let me in
by kindness and good deed
how breathlessly you wend me in
by words those which I heed

a mentor you were meant to be
teacher of values respected
I am but one student of thee
your words to hundreds directed

mayhap Merlin’s cloak you wear
or Socrates’ books have held
never mind, ‘tis truth you share
as ignorance is by you felled

I learn more by you, dear Sir
than any student in your realm
so please then be thus assured
you’re the Captain at my helm

we shall brave the water’s wake
or soar the skies of yore
roam the plains for inherent’s sake
or wander the great lakes shores

between the times of yesteryear
and into the future’s days
you shall teach and we shall hear
as we look beyond the haze

how gently you have let us in
by kindness and good deed
how breathlessly you wend us in
by words those which we heed

Oh boy I get to be first!

I learn more by you, dear Sir
than any student in your realm
so please then be thus assured
you’re the Captain at my helm

This was another "keeper" and it is funny that so many of us are sailing on the same ship right now isn't it?  I am so glad he knows the way, for sometimes I am very lost.  You write of faith beautifully, and of course, your mentor.

Must be about Rod Mckuen...

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

Deep waters, for sure. Intrigue and admiration fill each stanza.

we should all have such a mentor...and perhaps the greatest one of all is inside ourselves when we take the time and stop..listening for the words that lie just under the surface...

well written tribute... and as usual... very captivating

Wonderfully said, O Lady in White...
