The Elders

Mountains high, covered in cloud,
hide moving shapes as if with a shroud.
Only eyes bright could see the move,
of two ghostly creatures gliding smooth.
Weaving between tree and scattered rock,
drawn to a destination set by a clock.

A clock of time, ticking off the days,
brought together all ancient ways.
The time had come, as all things do,
for legends to live in silent pursue.
The old one's muzzle, grizzled with shots of gray,
his mate by his side, throughout that long day.

Down they came, even into the night,
the bright moon covering with her light.
A mountain stream rushed in frantic keep,
until they came to the pool in seek.
The female dropped her head to drink,
and that is where she saw the link.

For the reflection from bright light,
presented a difference in her sight.
The face that looked back in gentle swirl,
was framed in braids of an Indian girl.
Mists did move as the old one took drink,
forming the face of a warrior, she did not shrink.

The two wolves lifted high their heads,
touching muzzles in silent stead.
Laying down then on grassy ground,
they went to sleep without a sound.
Upon the morn, there did awake,
founders of the tribe in human shape.

Did I ever tell you how wonderful you are at telling stories, Sweet Warrior?   I love this of course.

This is a wonderful tale. Wolves are amazing creatures, and now, we all know why. All the more reason to offer them our protection from extinction.

logan - Thank you for posting this legend.  I had not heard it before.  Additionally, I am extremely thankful that the legend is based upon wolves and not cats!   The poetry flowed well, and the storyline was developed perfectly.
