The Lady of Shallot

I hold a pale photograph
knowing I must get her back.
That sparkle and winsome smile amid
a crown of golden curls.
She floats in a chasm,
between all the words she ever heard.

"Please say something nice to me, Daddy, please
don't yell at me, it scares me."

She has been gone for what seems like forever,
and yet there is still hope!
I know I hear her voice in a mute sigh.

"I made a friend today, Mommy, but I was too
shy to say much."

In first grade someone stole her pencils.
She couldn't read the chalkboard but squinted
and cried on the playground, afraid to say anything.

"Everyone is blurry, what's wrong with me?"

Nothing, small one, nothing is wrong with you.
Don't you know the experts all say you are beautiful,
special and unique?

"You don't follow directions, that's your problem
and you don't listen.  You never do anything right."

Ah, but she followed an inner clock.
The movement was hidden between the inner ear
and her heart.  Somewhere inside the clarity
of a soul, if one could be defined.
It was tiny once but then spirits never grow.

"I'm lost and I've wet my pants. Someone help me!!!"

I must get her back, safe where she is warm
and knows she is loved.

There, I see her just within reach.

"They say everyone has a gift but God must have
forgotten you!"

When I find her and I will, she will be safe.

And her words will be honest and pure once again.

God has not forgotten her and he never shall.

Peace will come from within and win over a "demon" every time. This was an excellent write, and speaks to so many trapped in memories that hold them hostage.
