      The Sound of Night

Dusk drew her mark around the harbor
and filled it with the sound of a band down wind,
hot and filled with drum of blues
it pulsed down the path where boats drew down
and lapped and quiet sighed.

I was drawn toward the sound of night
from the light
and a patio looking into a photo opportunity,
yet, German Shepherd waited in patience at the door
to a tiny bar and dance floor
where the rhythm of hot night pulsed
and dancers loved openly in movement so sensual
the blues, the blues, the blues so torched
my eyes drew towards the coupling in want.

I sat and watched the day die down
out the opening of the sultry floor
and the guitar played and the voice was old,
yet, new in me so wanting,
wanting to dance.

And then the night ended, the set was done
and the men in whom I saw Nam
grew quiet and still
and all around was the beginning and the end

and they stood in silhouette against the stage
hand to heart some and others salute in proud
and the band played and the voices rose in song,
The National Anthem so strummed and sung
tears were in the words.

Dusk drew her mark around the harbor
and filled it with the sound of a band down wind,
hot and filled with drum of blues
it pulsed down the path where boats drew down
and lapped and quiet sighed.

Unbelievable, Martie. You have the most incredible way of painting a word picture, full of so many different emotions.

"And then the night ended, the set was done
and the men in whom I saw Nam
grew quiet and still
and all around was the beginning and the end"

I see them in front of me right now, and I hear the music.

You have caught the magic of the night in here with your words.  I like idea of them singing the anthem, but I liked it just as well without that reference (just a humble opiniion) because how many times have we all been caught "watching" at night?  I guess I missed your full point, but hey, that's what readers are for right?  lol   anyway, great poem...

Midnite--I'm glad this became real to you, it was what I wanted.

Logan--Timing is everything...thankyou for loving this.

Kit--Your words always mean a great deal to me.

Janet Marie--You always make me smile.

Karilea--Yes, there was heart...thank you for seeing it.

Marge--I wish you had been there too!

Sy--If I can set a wile and smile on your face...wow!  That's great!

Apache--Point...hmmm, I guess it was to try and describe a moment of heart that meant a great deal to me, so you could see it too.  I'm glad you liked the poem.

Oh I did like It a lot.  I hope you didnt take my reply wrong, I just got caught up in a feeling and then was thrown when you went somewhere with it.  I have a habit of going off on my own track before I listen to what was intended. I liked it in several ways, that is what I meant to say.  :0

"tears were in the words."

The tears found their way from the words to my cheeks... This is superb, Martie... and so real I could smell the sea.

Oh Martie, I was there! Wow you pulled me right into the poem.

my favourite lines...

Dusk drew her mark around the harbor
and filled it with the sound of a band down wind,
hot and filled with drum of blues
it pulsed down the path where boats drew down
and lapped and quiet sighed.

and dancers loved openly in movement so sensual
the blues, the blues, the blues so torched

and the men in whom I saw Nam
grew quiet and still
and all around was the beginning and the end

Excellent imagery Martie! Beautiful writing

A bit of all that excited me, saddened me, and also made me smile has been already said, so I will simply say, this had your signature on it like no other I have ever read, and yes, it is a keeper that is for sure.  Wonderful job on this one Martie, you had me the entire time.
