By the Lake

I surely would not choose to linger here
where cold winds gather leaves into a spin.
Between the lake and woods I faintly hear
your voice in whispers of the autumn wind

I would not stay to watch the shadows fall
across the icy waters of the pond
If not for your sweet portrait that I saw
in mirrors of the waters and beyond

I would not have desire to withstand
The bitter chill of this October night
If I didn’t feel your touch upon my hand
To warm my face as though by fire’s light

I only come to hold on to the love
Through memories of joy that once was ours
And when the silver moon appears above
I stand in silence wrapped in passions powers

What folly to be out this bitter night
Though now my heart is filled with love’s delight

Oh dear Liz ... what a beautiful remembrance. You've captured a wistful, nostalgic mood wonderfully in this piece, just lovely!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Liz--When love is involved, the cold is not so cold, but sadness lingers at the edges of this poem that warms. It is beautiful, as always.

What folly, indeed. I can't imagine why anyone would want to be out in the cold (hehe...I live in Alaska). But love's memories really can keep you warm even on frigid nights.

This beautiful memory gave me a warm smile, and the painting of your destination in heart and mind were absolutely beautiful.
