love existed before I came into being
I was merely chosen to personify it
they raised me,
born of sea and foam,
to a position of worship and adoration
and I welcomed them,
they longed for the touch of my hand,
just one glance from my eyes
and I looked on them
and loved them

oh the nights of rapture I have known!
mortals and gods alike
I have known them all
nights that not even
the most gifted of poets
could begin to describe

but, when the dawn appeared,
I was alone
worshipped and adored by many,
but alone
they only wanted the love that
I could give them
but did they stop to think
that I could give them love as well?

a tear began to form in her right eye

can you imagine?
the Goddess of Love
giving love to all
and yet
receiving none in return

she paused for a moment,
and took a sip of her wine
and in that moment
the only thing that I could think
was that I wanted to be her
that I could live without giving love
as long as I could get
all the love
that I needed

or could I?

This is the first of the "Voices of the Goddess" mini-series.  Thanks to Melissa Honeybee for the idea.

Sven...

I could give them
but they stop to think
that I could give them love as well?

this seems to be not what you mean...maybe you meant that  she  wanted  love in return as well..I am not  sure if this is just me not wide awake or a word or two needing rearranging...just a  thought  hugs

What a beautiful melancholy piece!  Gosh, you took this goddess to greater and deeper heights!  I never ever thought of her as being denied love or feeling alone, I always pictured her as the epitome of supreme beauty and sensual pleasures; I guess I denied her of the right of having a heart which feels.
This is just beyond clever, she's kinda like the Mona Lisa, isn't she?  Immortalized, mysterious, known world-wide, gorgeous, yet behind the myth perhaps she is empty just like us all.
Am I over-analyzing this piece?  Well, I love it!
This is excellent!  Into my library this goes, I can relate to this.

Oh Sven, what lovely verses.

that I could live without giving love
as long as I could get
all the love
that I needed

or could I?

Very good lesson here. We are nothing if we do not have someone to give our love too. This is an absolutely gorgeous poem. Your way with words continues to amaze me
