The Flag

From out my window I can see the banner there
Uplifted gently by a wisp of autumn air
A floating silken veil that billows in the breeze
And drapes it’s colors far across the silver seas

Our emblem we have proudly raised in freedom’s cry
It’s colors blown against the morning azure sky
A canopy of blue above, with stars of white
Magnificent as all the splendid stars of night

October wind turns brisk and now it has unfurled
The glory of its brilliant colors to the world
I watch it from my window as it proudly streams
the victories of the past, and hope of future dreams

As rippled stripes of red and white in honor wave
to fallen soldiers, who in desperate hours gave
the gift of life, that freedom reign forevermore
This flag of liberty displayed outside my door

Today the banners wave in breezes bittersweet
These glorious flags that flutter up and down my street

Liz--So many flags...does give heart pause to think, why not before.?  The band of strength grows with the symbol, I think.  Hugs for this poem!

Wonderfully done, Elizabeth! I love it! It's a great reminder that freedom has its price...the lives of those who have and who will die for it.

Not just in your country my friend, but all over Canada as well.  Our flags are flying side by side now, off the rooftops, cars, stores, homes...everywhere.
In fact all stores are sold out of the American flag here in this border city.
Well said poet friend!  ~Nancy~

Thank you for your remarks, fellow flag wavers, and Nancy for the happenings in Canada. I feel I should get a Canadian flag to fly beside mine, plus a lot of other flags.
Thanks
Liz

Sorry a little late, but yes, we are all flying U.S. flags here in B.C. too.  On every light post where normally it is a Canadian flag - yours is flying side by side with ours, kind of like the way we are in here, side by side, and it is all as it should be.  Wonderful write Liz.

My husband served in Viet Nam and 25 years as an officer. The flag has very deep meaning for me, personally. Thank you for sharing this one with us.  Thank you.

Liz, it's been far too long since I've read.

Lovely poetic praise for all the meaning Old Glory holds.  I'm also heartwarmed by our Canadian neighbors flying our flag beside theirs.  Thank you for writing and sharing this wonderful piece.

Hi, Liz!!

well, despite being a little 'political' (I am not from US, so feeling a little offended *_*), this poem was written with sheer brilliance. Thank you for your generous contribution!

Your words are very warming, all of you. I salute you back, balladeer.. AS for the Canadian flag and the Union Jack, may they always fly on freedoms soil, and they would also fly at my door in support of you. I hope nothing like this happens again to anyone. Thank you neighbors to the north for your embrace.
Liz
