Too quickly the seasons, in time-stilled flight,
Passed by us both as they slipped the bight
Leaving us to wonder, in our self-made plight,
Could we have done much better?

Time couldn't wait as we sowed our seeds,
The future called with its own pleas,
And so we deserted what we knew as needs,
Could we have done much better?

Rationalizing seemed so clear, distinct,
Who needed time to pause and think?
We embraced decisions that spawned the brink,
Could we have done much better?

The passions sought in times long passed,
The early pangs bringing sharpened gasps,
We hungered for the flames and ash,
Could we have done much better?

In retrospective glances back,
At what is now the distant past,
We realize now that what we have,
Is, indeed, much better.

But, no matter the outcome, either way,
There would have been costs to pay,
So let us now embrace this day,
And not wonder about the "whethers."

Very nicely written. Enjoyed! I also have asked myself those same questions.

Hi there, Walt - It's been awhile since I've been able to take the time to read a lot of poetry and respond.  I enjoyed your cowboy wedding song especially.

Marie - Thanks for dropping by and responding - like most insecure, verbose, kitty kickers - I need lots of encouragement - lol

Munda - Thanks for that nice kudo - It's been awhile since I've tried anything original - I had to resort to editing and reposting a poem I wrote a year ago (Wisdom of the Aces)  just to get back into the flow of things.

I loved the poem but I must be getting on LOL, as I do "whatever feels good" and that's that!  I never second guess myself or I would be mad by now    Loved this, and to this poem I have to agree - if you wrote it dear man, you indeed know the answer!   I really enjoyed it, and seeing your poem here today too.

Martie - Thanks for your replies and your encouragement.  It seems a long time since I've posted in here, and then to post two poems over two days is really strange to me.  I miss all of you so much.

Sharon - Have you noticed the correlation between age and the "wonderful advices" and the "that's me, alrights"?  LOL - I think we all learn the lesson in this poem and the other poem I posted yesterday in our own due time.  Perhaps one of our obligations in life is to pass those lessons along to others to help them through the straits.

Lady - As I wrote to Sharon, you are more than welcome to use the advice.  It may give you rest and reassurance, in time.  I have enjoyed reading your poetry.

LgnJhn,

Yep, we can always wonder if we coulda, woulda, shoulda, but that doesn't change the game score, does it?

Good write, so glad to see you back in the saddle, as it were!

I'm glad we didn't listen to the "weather reports" when cloudy skies were forcast..we lived through the storm and are enjoying the bright sun in our lives.  I still think he's brilliant!

Wonderful JngJhn!  Such a positive message woven into this verse ... and one I should heed much more often myself.  Thank you for this gentle reminder. Much enjoyed!

Best wishes,

Anything embraced would surely be better. I enjoyed this surrender to what you know...what you have...and the appreciation of it.

It's good to see your name again in the blue pages...

This is so well expressed, and with a clever title, too!

This one's a keeper for sure, god knows that I need the reminder~

Take care,

I've spent too much of my life worrying about the "whether report". Just living for the enjoyment I find with my love and letting the past go is all I need. The future looks so much brighter.
Enjoyed reading you again.

Hi ho John,
Whether the weather is wet or dry you are always in fine fettle. If I had my druthers I would always choose to heed your words of wisdom. I like the aaa verse with the tie in the last line...I know how hard that is to do.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Whether or not we could've done better... Who's to say?.. All we have is where we've been... and that's the best & the worst of it... Hey there's a poem there... I like this one, sweet Mike...
