The Game

Energy ripples through the air,
Palpable tension,
A sudden snap,
The ball flies,
The offense attacks,

Bodies smash,
Teams clash,
Muscles move in liquid motion,
The dance begins.

Back he fades,
Suddenly, like a rocket,
The ball shoots through the air.
Down he goes as the warriors pile on,
Treasure gone,
The battlefield turns.

The ball flies true,
Snatched from the air,
With the deftness of dire need,
Cuddled now securely,
Held in the muscular warriors embrace,
Protected by his might,
He turns and runs for the glory of his tribe.

The enemy close behind,
He runs for his life,
He reaches the end,
Safe now,
He is hit from behind,
Taken down as bone snaps,
The crowd cheers,
No one hears,
The agony of victory,
As the game is done.
I have never followed football, but recenty my son Danny started Pop Warner Football and as I sat one afternoon watching him pratice this poem came to me. Enjoy...

Thjis poem was about FOOTBALL?!!!  I thought it was about Balladeer's date with a group of Amazons!  Great descriptive writing here.

And you've described the game quite well, seems to me.  Recently I heard a couple of older gentlemen relate how much they hurt from their early days on the field...

much to be said for common sense....
