Embers

Lost in red of glowing ember
Eye in mesmerized remember
Sees a picture painted in
November’s frigid chill of night

It was by a warming fire
Night of longing, love’s desire
That her staring eyes were deeply
Mired in the subtle light

Long ago this youthful splendor
That for years would cruely render
Painful thoughts and visions to a
Tender heart of purest gold

Love still burning in the deepness
Of the night, in taunting sleepless
hours the lonely heart in weary
weakness still the past beholds

In the fire the face of passion
In desire’s embracing fashion
Love that once to this sweet soul
Was rationed within embers’ keep

Now she stares into the ashes
Glowing embers, little flashes
Til the blinking of her lovely
lashes fall into a sleep

He slowly enters, stepping lightly
Lights again the fire nightly
And still he watches o’er his love
From brightly shining stars above

Such a well crafted bittersweet poem, and these lines stung in remembrance for me as well as others I am sure...
Love still burning in the deepness
Of the night, in taunting sleepless
hours the lonely heart in weary
weakness still the past beholds

Do you know that I "save" reading you until last sometimes? Perfect meter, the flow sets the tone--and the internal rhyme? My favorite thing! Always an inspiration, Liz!
