In Tribute to Steve Irwin - "The Crocodile Hunter"

Now if I sound enthusiastic, it's because I am …
I want to share the story of a very special man;
He's not a cartoon character, nor fiction writer's dream,
He is as real as you or I - a man of great esteem.

A native of Australia, where he was born and raised,
Among the crocodiles, he grew, in tune with nature's ways;
From infancy to teenage years, he gathered vast respect,
For all the creatures of the world who suffer from neglect.

It's through his grand enthusiasm, all are mesmerized,
His love and his sincerity could never be disguised;
It matters not the species, nor their size or temperament,
From scales to fur - from fins to paws, his warmth is heaven sent.

He charms the largest crocodiles, he soothes the fiercest snakes,
He swims with seals and sweetly calls orangutans his "mates";
He cares for wombats, wallabies and joey kangaroos,
Koalas, spiders, geckos … there is nothing he'll refuse.

He sees the beauty in their souls, acknowledges their pain,
Explores deep in the heart of them, what others can't explain;
"She's just a little grumpy," he may whisper to the wind …
"But isn't she just darling?" he will murmur with a grin.

In total admiration, he implores, "Look in her eyes!"
"She's beautiful … she's gorgeous!" as he genuinely sighs;
Infectious in his presentation, one can't help but feel,
The same emotions he portrays with passionate appeal.

The world would be a better place, if more would emulate,
This hero of the wilderness, whom I appreciate;
A teacher of the greatest sort, he shares his gift with all …
The gift of understanding, for all creatures great and small.

/Kit McCallum

Enjoyed reading this tribute Kit
and you're right
we could learn a lot from our surroundings

How cute!!! And what sweet sentinments, I liked this one very much.  Tis true, if only there were more people out there like that, ones that regarded the human race as he does the animals.  But I guess that starts with each of us, so I should better my ways before ragging on those of the world eh?   . . . . ANYWAYZ I loved the poem, but then I always love your poems Kit, I have yet to run into one that I even slightly dislike. Good job, keep em comming!!!

Thanks, and yes, I have watched him in action. Amazing man. I'm afraid my views on alligators aren't as loving as his views on crocs. But he is genuine, and so is this tribute.

I agree completely! He can look at what I consider a not so pretty animal and find the beauty in it...it would be nice if we all did that! And he teaches a valuable lesson - respect. I admire him greatly, I think you should send him your poem!

The man is nuts!! Cerfifiably insane! He crawls up to the deadliest snakes in the world! He holds them by their tails!
He swims with alligators!! Lets poisonous spiders crawl on him!!!! He's married!!! The man is wierd!!!

(I like him, too   )

Great poem for the Croc Man. You definitely highlight a new perspective for your readers.

Don't care what people say
Just follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
To return to innocence.

Once again, Kit, you combine wonderful meter and rhyme with a humorous yet insightful message of descriptive tribute.  Your poems make me smile.

I think he has more that a Vegimite Sandwich when he goes on hunt for an alligator's trail...
Maybe that is why he is always looking at the long past crocodile's tail?

Very cute Kit, and this is one man the people of Australia are proud of, but don't even ask them about that "other" crocodile hunter, will you?

Kit, I showed this to my sister who keeps snakes and knows Steve. This was her comment...
"I loved it - the poem's right - he has a passion for a lot of things most people wouldn't give the chance to live - and I appreciate that  - Ellie."

And I would also like to know if it has been sent to him.

Sunshine:   I'm glad you enjoyed it Karilea, thank you my friend (and I'll comment on the other below)

Charisma:  Ah Charisma, my sentiments exactly ... he is a wonderful role model, many thanks to your kindred spirit.

Interloper: LOL ... I think that's part of his fascination Interloper ... the adrenalin rush just watching him interact with wildlife is a treat in itself - the fact that it's woven with messages of conservation and preservation warms my heart the most.

Dee:  Thank you so much for letting me know about your sister's comment Dee. That's wonderful to hear!  I wrote this about 2 months ago after watching another of his shows, and did send it via e-mail to the Australian Zoo at the time. I also signed the guestbook at their site, though it's not been updated. I never did hear anything back, but it would be fun to know if it did reach him. I guess I'll never know, LOL.

Much appreciation,
/Kit

The Lonely Stranger: LOL ... sorry, I was responding while you were commenting!  I loved your response ... by cracky, I can hear his voice. I'd like to be Stevo too, LOL!

Elizabeth:  Thanks so much Liz, so you're a fan too?  My goodness ... there's more of us than I thought, LOL!

Walker:  LOL, thanks Walker!  When I went to sign the guestbook, one of their questions was something about "what rumours of Steve's death had you heard" ... I guess there's more than a few circulating. I hope he's careful ... I want to watch his shows for a long time to come!

Much appreciation,

Kit - have you noticed that he's NEVER ONCE MENTIONED CATS?!!!!  eh?  Do you think is a coincidence?  I mean, he grabs deadly snakes by the tail and holds them up, but have you ever seen him do that with a cat?  I would love to see that!  lol

This is a wonderful, wonderful poem, and a tribute to a terrifc person.  My three stepsons and I all love this guy.
