I pull in the driveway
a little after midnight.
From my car I see the glow
of the living room lamp.
My key turns loudly in the lock
and I tiptoe up the stairs.
The television is on
and a comedian is doing his thing
on a late night talk show.
There you are.
Mouth open and snoring softly.
The remote on the floor beside you.
Fully intending to wait up for me,
you probably fell asleep
right after the sports highlights.
For just a moment I stand
in the light of the lamp and watch you.
I think of waking you
to let you know you can move
to the comfort of your bed.
But I take the afghan
off of the couch
and cover you up instead.
I lay down in the floor
so you will see me when you wake
and know that I'm alright.
They always say
"Just wait until you have kids,
then you'll understand."
But I already understand.
Thank you, Dad, for all the sleep
you've lost over the years
because of me.

This is so, so touching. I love it.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?
