"The dates on our tombstones lack any meanin'
the only thing that matters is the dash in between 'em"
                     -Old Appalachian Rhyme
I've tried leaving it in the confessional,
at four or five shrink's offices,

in the cedar chests at the foot
of several unsuspecting Lovers beds.

Hell, I've even attempted being clever "losing"
it in the care of strangers on the bus.

But it's swelling presence is constant.
The Book of the Past, whose pages are written

with each uplifted heel, each exhaled breath,
every dried tear and spent orgasm.

I've tried to erase it's darker pages, only
smudging their lessons dooming potential recurrence.

Being unable to escape it I reflect
on how it will be edited in the end.

What will be made of the continued reappearance
of chapters titled Blame and Guilt?

Or the abrupt and cliff hangered curtailment
mid sentence, even mid word treatise Love and Success?

What will be made of the one called Happiness
which contains but one word; Almost?

Not even an essay dedicated to Contentment,
but volumes captioned Anger, Wrath.

While Faith and Charity make for
skimpy reads and Hope diaphanous.

It seems the Seven Deadly Sins have
representation but Meek not a squeak.

It's as hardbound as the rock of Gibraltar
and has a chain attached to my present

and mineral rights on the future.
I believe I know the ending.

It becomes our headstone
and outweighs our coffin.

Twice in one day your poems have left me speechless - your depth is amazing, your words are wrenching.

Several lines into this... as I realized where you were taking it .... I started smiling and shaking my head at the sheer poetic cleverness of it ...
this is a very cool write Richard...
you took the extended metaphor and theme and made it your own....
as for the intentions of the emotions
I relate to far too many of your chapters...
but I guess I am hoping for a rewrite or a
sequel of second chances...
I know we all deserve a happy ending ...
and remember..not all those seven sins are yours...some things we atone for --
are passed on to us by others...
as for those chains...
those wise men "we" are always quoting...
they keep saying...
"only we can set ourselves free"
Once again your words effect me and reflect me...
must mean your a poet, huh? *L*
excellent writing R ... truely.

Well tomorrow holds only mystery
And who's to say what might be
But in you I found a love so strong
The sun and the moon looked on in jealousy

This is amazing, I can't begin to say which parts I like, the whole thing is so emotionally touched. The book of the past, heavy as can be..

Absolutely brilliant. I could pick out my favorite verses, but there are SO many. Stupendous.

Well you really did it with this fantastic, metaphorically brilliant piece of writing; you are now indelible in my mind as a Poet Lauriat.  However, I would not mind editing a few of those chapters, as a friend, I make a great proof reader and could write in a little more happiness   Wow Richard, really, this was absolutely fantastic writing, and held me from beginning to end.  The only sad part is it speaks your heart.

We often lament the past tis true
but here are some wise words just for you
everything happens for it's own reason
everything changes from season to season

You've really touched a chord in me with this one sir. We are blessed to have you here among us (but get out of that gulag! it sounds like something Hungarian with macaroni and tomatoes!)

Wow! No way will I ever believe your chapters are anything less than brilliant. Whether you speak of a skid mark of carefree self indulgence or a Lock Down of unmarked soul searching....you do it with heart...and with the expertise of a tightrope acrobat. You fall down good and you get up even better. You're not ready Richard for any tombstone...and your words never will be.

Sincerely,
Regina

there's a lot of meat in this one, it's very GOOD.  I have this same philosphy now....I delete the words that I don't need and concentrate on the ones that are truth.
