I walked along a dry creekbed
  Kicking stones around,
Thoughts streaming through my head
As my shoes scuffed along the ground.
I thought I had seen so many
  Until I saw it there
A scuffed and scarred up penny
Laid on the ground, I stared.
Lincoln's face was tarnished
And the copper was turning green
Like so many other pennys
That I know we all have seen.
But something in this one was different
  Something was not quite right
I know its only one cent
But I took it home that night.
I lay the penny in a dish
  Surrounded it with acid
Hoping to eat away the tarnish
  And make the copper placid.
The next morning when I found it
It was bright and shiny copper
So I took it from the acid
And rinsed it off with water.
And then the difference struck me
Like an anvil with a hammer
The difference in this penny
  Nearly made me stammer.
You see Lincoln was smiling
And his eyes were shining bright
His image most reguiling
What an image, what a sight!
For on this shining penny
  Even though a simple cent
I saw the path of my country
  In the symbolism wrent.
For even though poor in value
  And tarnished from abuse
It now shown with pride and new
From the acid I had used.
It had come through the weather
  Through the much and mire
And aspired to be better
To be something so much higher.
So America don't be let down
By the selfish acts of a few
Be proud of this sacred ground
  And shine just like new.

Knight of the Rose.
