Undoing Hatred

Sometimes the seeds are planted in the bosom of the earth
And fester there for generations well before our birth
Ingrained into the mind while in the haven of the womb
The shadow of a heritage that walks us to our tomb

It is the shroud of hatred for another human race
Nationality, religious sect, that we cannot embrace
Hostility to human soul, a mirror of our own
Though clothed in different garments and a skin of different tone

Some seeds a thousand years ago produced initial leaf
Nourished by a common language, custom and belief
Into desired shape and size, the perfect molded flower
Cultivated by the hand of culture’s holding power

How can this hatred be undone, when etched into the brow
A tree of generations with its likeness on each bough
This is a question hard to solve, a slope that's steep to climb
And only God will give the answer in its proper time

You have hit the nail on the head with this wisdom rhyme Liz...
Handed down hate ... generations of passed on pain...
and the exact reason Man has been at war for nearly as long as "civilized(?)" nations have existed.
Some have lasted so long its hard to remember what they even started fighting about.

and your last lines are so true...
The only light at the end of the tunnel is forgiveness in place of a threatening fist.

well done poetess of grace
jm

Well tomorrow holds only mystery
And who's to say what might be
But in you I found a love so strong
The sun and the moon looked on in jealousy

Every once in a while, I think that the people at Passions could go out and fix the world.  Then I read something like this, and know we could do so...

Well done, Lady Santos...

In an escalation of the ages
original sin yet blazes,
quite naturally man rages
as hate's origin hazes.
Enjoyed your write.

Very powerful and honest, Liz. How true! Your compassion and wisdom shines through in this perfectly, and I thank you for such a poem.  Everyone in the world should read this.
Gosh, I love the way you write~

Take care,
Melissa~
